This book was helpful, a few dollars cheaper then the one at the college book store but, when your buying textbooks I guess every dollar counts. The expedited shipping took longer than I had hoped so I don't know if the extra money for it was worth it. Overall it's what I needed.

Great Homeschool AP Human Geography Text!

My 11th grade son used this text as his primary to self-study for the AP Human Geography test. He used it along with a study guide and earned a 5 on his AP Exam.

Decent--but Not cohesive...

My main gripe about this book is that it is organized in such a fashion that it makes it difficult to outline. The chapters don't develop in a manner that lends itself easily to straightforward interpretation of main ideas. Instead, the authors rely primarily on providing definitions of terms, and then presenting information that is of secondary consequence.

The book is informative, but not linearly coherent.

To address the issues raised by another reviewer about Islam, after some more scrupulous reading of those sections, I believe the reviewer let his anger get the best of him. For example, on the section dealing with the "Sour Grapes" reaction, he automatically combined the imposition of pork-eating taboos with the "sour grapes" reaction, which the authors clearly didn't do. They develop the idea and geographical importance of pork-eating, and gives the "sour grapes" reaction as a possible explanation to the eschewing of pork--and they offer others as well. The idea was to show that we don't know where it began, from a cultural stance. The author attaches from an early stage that eschewing pork was part of Judaism, a much older tradition than Islam or Christianity, and makes the point that the distribution of the taboo follows in line with areas that pork isn't easy to cultivate, since a nomadic lifestyle is not suitable for pork farming.

Note that this is different than saying "Islamic people made conquered peoples eschew pork because Islamic people were jealous of those who raised pork." This statement is almost nonsensical, but if you were to simplify the claim raised by the other reviewer, this is what you get.

Did later islamic kingdoms impose the non-eating of pork in the regions of Babylon and those cities near rivers? Yes they did. The author was wrong to use the language of "for revenge," as it puts a slightly moral stance on the books position, and does paint Islam in a negative light--which a good textbook shouldn't do.

And in dealing with the oft-violent histories of all three monotheist religions, the authors spent a great deal of time on the christian enslavement and mistreatment of Indians by the sword here in the Americas--showing that Christians did bad things in the name of their faith, just as Muslims did.

As far as religions go however, the treatment of buddhism and hinduism is even more sparse than it is on Islam, though I have yet to read a western-written book that covers eastern traditions in an interesting fashion. Most of them have a sudden style-shift from seeming interested in the subject matter to suddenly seeming more like an encyclopaedic regurgitation of well-known facts.

This book is guilty of this as well. Docked one star for its non-linear style, and one star for its poor treatment of eastern religions.

I give it 2 "horns" up

I am currently enrolled in Professor Terry Jordan-Bychkov's Cultural Geography class, and the book is basically a culmination of his travels all over the world. The majority of the pictures in the book were personally taken by Professor Jordan himself, and it makes the class even more interesting. Professor Jordan's love for Geography emulates throughout the entire book, and it is easy to read as a result. The book is set in very vivid outlines, so it is easy to follow, and each chapter builds upon one another to form the, in words frequently used by Professor Jordan, the "Human Mosiac." The book is intersting, easy reading, and the class is even better. For those of you former, future, or current Longhorns, I HIGHLY reccommend the class; for those of you who cannot have the opportunity to learn from such a brilliant and cultured man, the book is the next best thing

Creative Images But Not Much Emotion

I've read a couple JJ Argus books, and for the most part, they're fairly good. The images are really strong, and he's very creative. My only problem with his books is that they don't include much of the psychology. When I read a story about enslavement, I like to see the dominated character struggle and work through what it means to be owned. If you prefer a more psychological approach to dominance or submission, I'd suggest a book like Amy's New Owner or Bondage Girls: Sorority Sisters Enslaved. Still, definitely worth reading!

Too hard-core for me

I must admit that the types of stories I enjoy reading leave the BDSM in the bedroom. This story is hard-core 24/7 slavery with the needs of the masters far above that of Erin. In fact there were times when her needs were ignored & the situation started to border on abuse. Not my cup of tea at all.

The narrative is informed by three key concepts—indigenization, reflexivity, and social constructionism—and by the fascinating interplay between disciplinary Psychology and everyday psychology.

The authors complicate the notion of who is at the center and who is at the periphery of the history of psychology by bringing in actors and events that are often overlooked in traditional accounts. They also highlight how the reflexive nature of Psychology—a science produced both by and about humans—accords history a prominent place in understanding the discipline and the theories it generates.

Throughout the text, the authors show how Psychology and psychologists are embedded in cultures that indelibly shape how the discipline is defined and practiced, the kind of knowledge it creates, and how this knowledge is received. The text also moves beyond an exclusive focus on the development of North American and European psychologies to explore the development of psychologies in other indigenous contexts, especially from the mid-20th-century onward.

About the Author
Wade E. Pickren, PhD, is the Historian of the American Psychological Association. For eight years, Wade was both APA Historian and Director of Archives. He is currently on the psychology faculty at Ryerson University in Toronto and continues to serve as APA Historian.

Alexandra Rutherford, PhD, is Associate Professor of psychology in the History and Theory of Psychology Graduate Program at York University. She is the official historian of the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues and the Heritage Chair of the Society for the Psychology of Women.

Bought this book for my graduate historical bases of psychology course. I kept the book, which was a great move as this was a excellent resource for my quals and saved me a great deal of time. Overall, I found the book entertaining and it includes some wonderful anecdotes and pictures that bring a somewhat dry topic to life.

I'm specifically reviewing the electronic version of this book. As a student, I get all of my books in electronic form if possible because it is more convenient to have everything on my little iPad, and also I can highlight and remove highlights at will. This eBook, however, is very hard to read. The text is very large print, requiring constant page turning, and the page numbering is nuts. The table of contents lists page numbers, but they start at 143 and go to 9798. I like to be able to look at the table of contents to see how many pages are in the assigned reading so I can effectively manage my time, but that is very difficult with this book. I have to figure out how many pages in the eBook equate to a real textbook page and then do the math every time. If someone has a solution for font size and pagination issues with this text I would appreciate knowing!

Before entering politics, he was an award-winning comedy writer, author, and radio talk show host. He's been married to his wife, Franni, for 41 years-many of them happy. They have two children, Thomasin and Joe, and three grandchildren. Senator Franken graduated from Harvard College and received his doctorate in right-wing megalomania studies from Trump University.

Fair, funny, and frank

When I was about halfway though this book, I thought, "Well, I guess Franken definitely isn't running for president." By the end, I thought, "Well, maybe he is."

For strategic reasons, Franken has tried very hard not to be funny -- not even at the wit level of a "normal" thoughtful politician -- since taking office. That seemed like it was tough on him, and this memoir makes it clear just how tough it was, not only because Franken had been professionally funny for decades, but also because Franken had always used humor to say whatever he pleased throughout his life. This book is very funny, and Franken both borrows and satirizes the tropes of the traditional political bio in telling his own strange story of his rise to office.

Because Franken gives himself leave to be funny again in this book, he is also very honest about his colleagues, the state of American politics, and himself. He also reminds readers that most politicians do not actually hate each other, and are close friends across the aisle. (He and his wife were close with Sens. Mike Enzi and Mike Johanns, and Franken lauds Sen. Pat Roberts for having a great appreciation of humor.) His chapter on Ted Cruz has gotten the most attention -- though it's just a few pages out of the book -- but it's clear that what really irks Franken about Cruz isn't the latter's politics (though he loathes them) but that Cruz refuses to see the Senate as anything more than a battleground, and stands apart from (and in his mind, above) his peers.

I started thinking that Franken may not have ruled out a presidential run when I got to the parts of the book about his time in the Senate. (This is a memoir of his whole life, though he spends most of it on his political career, so that's maybe half the book.) He writes with sincerity and passion about the issues he cares about, and is honest about flaws in his own party's approach as well as that of the Republicans'. Some of these portions are a bit preachy, but they indicate that Franken really is interested in advancing a progressive agenda. (Franken is farther to the left than I am, so I did not always agree with him, but his points are well-argued.)

This is a fair, funny, and frank book about both today's politics and perhaps its most interesting participant.

Can I Have Al Franken For My Senator?

I have been a huge Al Franken fan for decades (I'm almost as old as he is.). I was delighted when he decided to run for the Senate and have grown ever more delighted over the past 9 years. I was nervous about reading his book because I didn't want to be disappointed. I need not have worried. I loved the style, the humor, the satire, the snark, and, most of all, the good-hearted honesty and integrity that shines through the whole book. It's as if he were standing right next to you, talking to you.

For those of us who love him, this book is a treat. If you're just finding out who he is - maybe because of the Cabinet hearings - read this and learn more about this brilliant, remarkable man. If you're a repentant Drumpf supporter, look at how much fun there is on the other side. If you're still a Drumpf supporter, forget it. You won't get half the jokes or understand the rest of the book.

I loved the "inside baseball" stories. I loved his straightforward descriptions of his Senate colleagues. I love how much he loves his constituents. I only have one regret - I live in Pennsylvania.

Superb, uplifting, funny, shocking, and honest

Al's insight into the political wonderland we have is eye-popping! I thought I understood American politics, but Al taught me tons. I laughed out loud so much that it annoyed my wife:) A great, honest, scary, and motivating book. I wish republicans would read it.
