Turned my Failures Into Success

Back in 1981 I found a copy of this book at my community college library. Prior to that I had been trying to grow carnivorous plants with only meager success since all the literature was up to that time was scant, and often based on pre-conceived notions about carnivorous plants. Most success I had were a combination of just applying common sense based on the little I knew about the plants, and just dumb luck. Most information up to that time led to quite a few dead plants.

After going through the book I was so entranced that I probably read it 10 or more times, and later purchased two copies of it, one of which I wore out since I was using it as more of a garden guide. Slack's book not only had beautiful pictures, but descriptions and natural history of species I had never heard of. This text was a turning point in being successful with carnivorous plants, and was instrumental in leading me to having a carnivorous plant nursery today.

Even though the information is getting a little dated, I still refer back to this book and his companion book, "Insect Eating Plants and How to Grow Them", to this day. Adrian Slack had some insights that were valuable, and wisdom that I quote to this day.

Some of the folks who give this book low ratings are not taking a couple things into account. This book was published in 1979; no computers, film photography, four color process offset printing. It was expensive back in this day to publish lots of color photos. I found the photos for the time period amazing. Also, Slack never intended this book to be a "how-to" guide; he did the cultivation section as an after-thought. He was already working on the second book which was a cp horticulture guide. It was meant to be a natural history guide. Even so, it was the best information out there at that time.

I would say this book is a must if your serious about carnivorous plants. It wouldn't be my first choice for a beginner, but would still provide excellent background on the natural history of the plants.

Outstanding reference for carnivorous plants!

I think some of the previous reviewers may not have been aware that Adrian Slack has a different book available that deals specifically with growing carnivorous plants. This book's intended purpose is definitely not to be a "growing guide" for carnivorous plants. Rather, it is a rigorous and detailed study of the plants themselves, their history, biology and trapping mechanisms. Yes, there is a small section in end of the book regarding cultivation, but it is clearly intended to serve more as an appendix than a main chapter in the book.

To dismiss this text on the basis that it is not a growing guide and that it lacks sufficient cultivation information is a cheap shot, because that was never the author's intent and anyone who has read it could tell you that.

For what this book IS intended to do, it is without a doubt the best on the market (even today!). No other carnivorous plant book on the market today covers their biology and trapping mechanisms in such vivid detail, nor do they provide such high quality drawings and examinations of just how these plants function.

If you want information on how to cultivate these amazing plants, this is definitely not the book for you. If, however, you want to know where these plants come from and seek rigorous scientific detail on just how they work, this is without a doubt the best resource in publication, bar none.

This book has been around for a long time and I hope it remains in publication because there is currently nothing else that supplies the same information. If you are growing these plants and want to know more about them than what is covered in more popular cultivation books (e.g. Peter D'Amato or Barry Rice's texts) then this book is what you need. It makes an excellent companion to many of the cultivation books on the market today and will give you an even greater appreciation and understanding of these remarkable plants.

Got a great deal on this former junior college library book. Wished it had more color illustrations. Otherwise an informative and interesting book on the subject of growing carnivorous plants from around the world.

Rathbone Dummies Win 7 Book

Very well written with a gentle humor. The book is written for all levels of computer knowledge. You can skip around and read subjects where you need help or have an interest. I chose to start studying at the beginning and even found the basic level of information interesting. Andy has a way of pointing out the secrets of Windows 7. He even taught me several points about Windows XP in the process.

The DVD is excellent and covers the basics of Windows 7. The book deals in the depth but the DVD gets you off and running and you can learn from there. Windows 7 is a good operating system but when you jump from XP to Win7 there are gaps that are not obvious. The DVD gets you up to speed quickly.

I think the DVD and book package are well worth the price. I have recommended it to several people already. They agree with me that it is a good purchase.

This is a tuff one to review!

First off I'm a little slow when it comes to technology. I somehow got left behind during the digital age.
I received this brand new & sealed out of date copy, sold on Amazon as used. So I was very pleased about that! So 5 stars to the 3rd party seller!
This is a tuff one to review! I could give it a 2, 3, or 4. I feel I'm being too kind if I give it a 4 star review! For me when I see a 3 star no way am I going to buy that. So maybe that's not fair either. Let me 1st say it depends on where you' re at concerning your level of computer dummieness. IMHO, it's way easier using the DVD than reading the same author's book. However, either I am the dumbest of the dummies or computer stuff is just that hard. It's written/ produced by geek people so a pc class at the local library might be easier. I don't understand why one such & such for Dummies is so thin on substance & another requires a degree. This topic is not without it's problems for sure. I bought it for my parents who are in their 80's. And because this DVD uses a different load/ menu style they can't even play it; Even though I had showed them how to play the different chapters during a visit. I do totally understand why they are having trouble playing it. It loads & plays in an outdated DVD rom menu style. So it's useless to them. Now I wish I'd kept it because with my old timers it's much nicer to refer to than using the book to jog my memory. Before I gave it to them I had studied, using it for a while. It usually involved repeating the chapter several times for me to get it. That's why I say produced by geek techs that don't relate well to average people. Or to me anyway!
To conclude, it is an all inclusive Win 7 training course. It does cover everything in the book in a condensed & somewhat easier version. I believe you can find a more easily understandable training on You Tube. But, this usually involves lots of searching & wasted time. My parents cannot do that.

Win 7 for Dummies

Over the years, I've purchased a number of 'For Dummies Book' because these books usually leave out a lot of the 'extra geeky details' that do more to confuse than to explain.

If you just want to know how to use Win 7 quickly and easily, then I recommend Win 7 for Dummies. I do suggest learning one chapter at a time. It's not intended to be read through as a novel. Once you've worked through one chapter, it'll be very easy for you to find anything covered in that chapter for future reference if you don't remember the details.

Has lots of good tips with great examples

[[VIDEOID:39093261]]The approach covered is primarily concerned with the use of line, development of form, and the simplified design of anatomy. It doesn't go into contour drawing, shading and expression.

The many illustrated examples are aimed at helping students develop a feel for the form and volume of figures they draw. To that aspect, I think it does a very good job.

The use of simple geometric shapes as drawing guides are simple to understand. Not only that, Michael Hampton also builds onto to those simplified mannequins with lots of clearly illustrated muscles. The muscle groups are visualised very distinctly in the examples. They are colour-coded to bring attention those that affect form when the body is in different positions.

I like the part on finding landmarks -- bones that are near the skin. Colour-coded and shown very clearly, with rotating views from front to back.

The book does have head drawing but the focus is on the form rather than the details of the features, although the examples do show the details. It still covers enough for for anyone to draw a decent head.

One thing that's missing is the mention of figure proportions, like how many heads tall a body, length of an arm, etc. That I think will complete the book. There's nothing on bones and you won't learn how muscle works, but this isn't an anatomy reference book. That said, having an anatomy reference book to go along will be extremely helpful.

This is a useful book for artists learning to create and pose their own figures. Highly recommend for beginner and intermediate artists.

This will become your favorite figure drawing book

I read the first chapter of this book and took an online class by Michael Hampton. I really wanted to read further into the book, and I'm so glad I got it. This book will fast become a classic in figure drawing right along with Andrew Loomis.
First, the book is broken down into gesture drawing and landmarks of the body. This will help you structure the skeleton and will get you familiar with where the muscle masses will go later. Most importantly, gesture drawing will help you pose the body in a dynamic and natural way. The gesture is the best way to get more interesting drawings and the breakdowns in the book are easy to follow and easy to complete.
The book moves on to the structure of the head and how to detail the features. With these three parts, the body is complete, and you will walk away knowing where to place everything. Then it details the features of the body like the arms, legs, hands, and feet. The instruction ends with understanding how fabric works on the body and how to use light and shade.

The book has colorful and detailed illustrations and examples. The book is broken down in such a way that it will be easy to come back to sections and use those sections as reference.

My only complaint is that it took me so long to add this book to my collection.

About the Author
Chase Sargent is a decorated fire officer who spent more than 26 years with the City of Virginia Beach Fire and Rescue Department as a Firefighter/Paramedic, Lieutenant, Captain, Battalion Chief, and recently retired as a Division Chief in command of B-shift. He obtained his BS degree in Forestry and Wildlife, with a major in Fisheries Biology from Virginia Tech and his MPA from Golden Gate University. He completed the Executive Fire Officer program and is an NFA instructor. Chase is a member of VATF-2 and the Operations Chief for FEMA's Urban Search and Rescue White Incident Support Team. Chase was the night operations officer at both the Oklahoma City Bombing and the World Trade Center Collapse. He is the president of Spec Rescue International, a training and consulting company in Virginia Beach. Chase has been the Chief Tactical Paramedic for the Norfolk division of the FBI since 1995 and is both COTOMS and OEMS qualified. Currently, he works as an independent contractor to the US Government (DOS/DSS) and volunteers as a firefighter in Virginia Beach and as a paramedic for the Courthouse Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Repetitive, disorganized

While I'm sure the author is a great leader, he should not have written a book or at least had someone do it for him. I agree with him 100% but this book is very repetitive and goes in the same circle over and over. I had to get this for a promotion exam in the fire dept. and feel that it could be a good book if it were cut in half ,but 400 pages of the same point reworded takes a toll on the human mind. He should have put trust in the reader that his message was received the third time around before reaching ch 4. This book has good points, but needs to be put in a logical and applicable order. On the next edition , please proof read as I'm sure there will be a 2nd edition , which inevitably is what these writers do to keep making money off of those that have to purchase these books.

This book is terrible. The author rambles and contradicts himself throughout the book. It Cleary did not have an editor that read it through. Not to mention that it has a very negative tone toward his former dept and other government agencies. Just a complete waste of time.

Part 3...WOW! A completely unexpected ending, you will NOT see it coming!

If I could I would give this series 10 stars!!
This installment (Rising Heat) of the Claimed ByThe Pack series is hot, Hot, HOT...scorching HOT! WOW does Kimber know how to write a sex scene but that isn't all. This installment has suspense around every corner. Intense scenes (not for trigger issues) surprised me in this installment that was almost hard to read because of how Mal and Neve behave and what happens to Tucker at the end of this installment but it adds to the telling of the story, which is so far an amazing story.

Part 2 had Neve and Tucker running to escape the flames without the rest of the pack in sight and Neve not being able to feel or sense them. Part 3 picks right up where Part 2 left off with Neve and Tucker racing through the forest with the flames hot on their heels and still no sign of the pack. But not for long, as they come into the clearing at the ranger station, Mal, Jake, Reed and Barrett come into view. They reassemble and Tucker directs them to head north to their home in upstate Michigan and off they go away from Hidden Forest and onto Wild Lake...Mal and Reed on foot (or paw), Barrett and Jake in the Jeep because Jake is not fully healed from his injuries and Neve and Tucker on Tucker's Harley.

They ride through the night and reach Wild Lake, the northern part of their territory the next day and Neve is in for a wonderful surprise. They walk over a rise and Neve beholds a farmhouse complete with a white picket fence, a porch swing also barn and…peace. We are then introduced, human brother and sister, Pat and Harold. They take Neve under their wing and into their hearts and into the family. Neve finds a confidante and “Mother” in Pat and a friend and “Father” in Harold and she starts to feel like this is home.

One night Tucker and Neve make love by the lake and Mal watches from the woods. Neve has a reaction to Mal being there and feels his presence in her body and her mate mark burns on her neck, the mark that Tucker gave her when they mated for the first time. This scares Neve and makes her wonder why she would have this reaction to Mal. A few days later, Tucker takes Reed, Barrett and Jake hunting for a day or two and leaves Mal, Neve, Pat and Harold at home. Neve goes down to the barn and meets the horses and is getting to know them when Mal comes into the barn. He gets close to her and they kiss Neve’s body wants to keep going, as before Mal’s presence effects Neve’s body and mate mark which scares her and they keep touching and Mal makes his move to take her and bares his fangs and wants to mark her but he can’t because she belongs to Tucker. Tucker senses, even though he is a great distance away, what Mal is about to do and howls which drives a wedge between Mal and Neve and scares Mal off and Neve knows that Tucker is on his way back because of what Mal has done. Mal runs far away from the pack, so far that Neve can’t sense him anymore.

Tucker returns to take ownership of Neve again and assert himself over her and make sure that Mal is gone. After he knows that Mal is gone, he takes Neve in hand and makes love to her and marks her again to strengthen his ownership of her and mark her again as his and to make sure that she is with him forever.

One day as they are alone, Mal returns and wants to challenge Tucker for Alpha or Neve or both. But suddenly something else happens and then something else happens and oh my goodness…you will NOT believe the ending of this installment! I had to reread the ending to make sure that I actually read it right. It will shock and stun you. It will make you yell…NOOOOOO!!

Kimber knows how to write a suspenseful book full of wonderful, well-developed, deep, interesting, intense, sexy characters that make you want to get to know them, have a glass of wine with them and essentially make them friends. This is an unbelievable series that keeps me coming back for more. I can NOT wait to read the next installment. How will it all end? Will Neve find her happily ever after ending? Will she find family, pack, people that she can for and about and people who will care about and for her?

The heat definitely rises in this 3rd installment!

The 3rd installment starts where the second leaves off. They awake to the cabin up in flames. Knowing that this was Asher's doing they know they must leave Hidden Forest behind and head to Wild Lake where the pack truly considers home. Neve meets the people who Tucker and the rest of the pack consider family and she also finds out more about Tucker and his past. I loved how we got more of Tucker here he opened up to Neve and told her about his past. How everything came to be. How he became Alpha and how his pack was formed. Alot happens in this installment. Tucker and Neve's trust and connection for each other grows stronger.(And yes still scorching hot!) Tucker faces the ultimate betrayal that I didn't see coming at all. And of course the threat of Asher and his pack was always in the air. This was definitely one heck of ride. Lots of action and when it was nearing the end I was feeling pretty stressed. And that ending! One of those endings where I'm shouting "Nooo!" at my kindle. I truly don't know how Neve is going to get herself out of this one or what the pack is going to do about it. A must read edgy series

I want to start by saying I have read books 1-4 of claimed by the pack by author Kimber White and am I so so glad I did. And let me say that I was nervous when I started the first book of this series. I am an avid urban fantasy reader and primarily there is little if any erotic material in them. I was so glad when I picked this series out to read. The story in each of these was tremendous. And that's what I loved about the series. I was so scared that so much would be sacrificed and be replaced by the erotic. But it wasn't. It is a gripping, edge of your seat, shape shifter series with a thread of edgy erotic weaved throughout. Just when I thought I knew where it was going it would twist and turn and go somewhere else. I also enjoyed all of the characters that were presented throughout these books. And if having lots of characters that you get to know throughout the series is a must for you, there are tons. And hats off to the author for presenting a book that could be enjoyed whether you're male or female. One piece of advice though to all the other readers, make sure you got the day free because once you finish the first book you will not stop till you've read the all.
