In addition to Gospel stories, the author invokes wave-particle duality and an eclectic array of thinkers from Patton to Baudrillard to illuminate the qualities and the contradictions of leadership. But paradoxes like "A Wise Leader Dares to Be a Fool" and "To Live, You Must Die" are just mystical window-dressing for familiar rules of managerial good behavior, including "when you're wrong, admit it," "keep your cool," and "do not micromanage." What counts are the anecdotes-the heart and soul of leadership manuals-and Williams's are engaging, if sometimes off base. An NBA executive and author, most recently, of How to Be Like Mike (as in Jordan), Williams adroitly mines the sports world's mother lode of leadership anecdotes; but his historical anecdotes-Robert E. Lee, instigator of some of history's bloodiest battles, exemplified "absolute love," while Auschwitz commandant Rudolph Hoess's failing was his lack of "integrity"-will confound many. Still, the numerous small homilies on humility, empathy and listening skills sprinkled into his smooth story-telling will give business managers much to reflect upon.

Pat Williams is a great author and leader himself. Each book that he writes helps one build on the great principles of life and success. Paradox of power teaches us about the paradox's of life and how they lead us to success. Simple but hard to apply principles, but if we take heed to them, we can plan on a successful productive life.

A Fresh Perspective on Timeless Leadership for Everyone

At a time when America can use it most comes a perspective on leadership delivered by someone who has lived his own words and succeeded. While many influential leaders throughout the ages are cited as examples and role models in this book's 230+ pages, the central figure is a man who would not be seen as power figure by today's definition. Yet his methods, when sought with sincerity and applied as though part of our reasonable responsibility, always work. The author has spent his professional life in the world of professional sports, but this book is not just for sports fans or corporate leaders (although that latter can and will certainly benefit from the wisdom of Mr. Williams). Anyone in a position of influence over others (who doesn't qualify there?) will find life-changing advice from time well spent in this book. Read slowly for more effective processing!

I had such high hopes.....sigh...

I LOVE Meg Cabot's other books, especially the ones written in the email/journal style format. I was so excited to get this book to read on a long plane ride.

UGH! It was all I could do to get through to the end. Although I found the male love interest funny, I really, really, detested the "heroine" of the book. The repeated references to her social ignorance and cat love seriously grated on my nerves. The romantic part of the plot was just beyond belief to me. I had promised a friend that I'd loan her the book when I was done, but now I've told her not to bother reading it.

I did, however, enjoy the Afterword where Meg gave insights into how she came up with the story based on the paralells to her life and the story of her own elopment. That was truly the best part of the book.

Fun day's read

As I frittered away a day with only minimal attention to chores, reading this book was an enjoyable pastime. This frivolous elopement tale was a good summer read and with my spotty memory, the fact that I remembered author Meg Cabot was a plus. The unlikely romance between maid of honor and best man eclipsed the wedding, naturally.
I'm so glad I took the time to read the ending comments to see how the story related to the author's experience, which proved that truth is stranger then fiction.

Hilarious New Work By Cabot

Thirty-year-old Jane Harris is ecstatic to know that her best friend since first grade, Holly Caputo, is heading off to the small town of Le Marche, located in gorgeous Italy to marry her true love, Dr. Mark Levine. What's even more exciting is the thought that she, Jane Harris, has been invited to witness the wedding. As it will be her frirst trip ever out of the U.S. of A, she plans on remembering every single little detail about it. Hence, she purchases a travel diary. However, when she meets who Mark is bringing along with him, Cal Langdon, a big-time journalist who just published a book about Saudi Arabia, Jane's perfect vacation is thrown off course. Cal is a pompous, precocious modelizer - someone who dates various models, then dithes them, or gets ditched by them - who, get this, doesn't know who Wondercat is. Everyone knows that Jane Harris is the creator of the lovable comic strip character, Wondercat - who just happens to be based on Jane's very own cat, The Dude. I mean, Wondercat is even being optioned for a show on Cartoon Newtwork. As if that weren't bad enough, Jane is dreading the idea of actually living with Cal for an entire week, but she'll do anything for Holly. So when tragedy strikes Holly and Mark, and threatens to ruin their wedding, Jane concocts a plan involving Cal that will ultimately save the day.

I have read Cabot's THE BOY NEXT DOOR and BOY MEETS GIRL, so was ecstatic to pick up EVERY BOY'S GOT ONE. As I expected, while not all of the characters from her two previous novels made appearances in this one, some of them did, which was a pleasure, as the characters in both of those novels were marvelous. As are the four new characters introduced in this particular novel. Jane is a fabulous character, whose passion for high-heeled shoes she can't walk in is hilarious. While the fabulous personalities of Holly, Mark, and Cal, all mesh together to create a cast of marvelous characters, that ultimately make this a fabulous book. Told in e-mails, and travel diary and PDA entries, EVERY BOY'S GOT ONE is a PRINCESS DIARIES for the adult set.

About the Author
DAVID LILJA received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is currently a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and a Fellow of the Minnesota Supercomputing Institute, at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He also serves as a member of the graduate faculties in Computer Science and Scientific Computation, and was the founding Director of Graduate Studies for Computer Engineering. He has served on the program committees of numerous conferences and as associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Computers. David is a Senior member of the IEEE and a member of the ACM.

Great introductory text!

In a nutshell: nicely written introductory text that covers the basics of performance analysis. It starts with an overview of performance analysis and associated techniques. The subsequent chapters lay the groundwork by giving key concepts and techniques, and then segue into the techniques themselves.
Content and Organization: 278 pages comprised of 11 chapters, a glossary and two appendices of probability distributions and selected statistical tables. Chapter topics are: (1) Introduction, (2) Metrics of Performance (what you should be measuring), (3) Average Performance and Variability (introduces statistical concepts and techniques related to computer performance analysis), (4) Errors in Experimental Measurements (good discussion of accuracy, precision and resolution, and the fundamentals of error quantification with which to validate your findings), (5) Comparing Alternatives, (6) Measurement Tools and Techniques, (7) Benchmark Programs (this chapter merits a book of its own), (8) Linear Regression Models, (9) Design of Experiments, (10) Simulation, and (11) Queuing Analysis.
This book requires some probability and statistics skills, but is a much gentler introduction to the subject than Raj Jain's classic, The Art of Computer Systems Performance Analysis. There are two things I especially like about this book: (1) it does not immediately launch into quantitative methods. Instead, it introduces them in manageable chunks that will not intimidate a reader whose math skills are rusty. (2) It includes design of experiments, which is a powerful tool that will also prove invaluable in capacity planning - the flip side of performance analysis.
If you've thumbed through other books on computer performance analysis and felt the learning curve was too steep or your math skills were not up-to-par, this book will give you the basics and begin you on a journey towards more advanced techniques. I highly recommend it as a first text on performance analysis and give it 5 stars for making this important discipline accessible to a wider audience.

Growing up in The Bronx, my friends and I would play many games in the parks and greens near Jerome Park Reservoir. Best of these was a rocky area between Claflin and Webb avenues near the Our Lady of Angels parish house. There the rocks and thick brushes were ideal for games boys usually play. There was hide and seek, imaginary battles with� space men �and cowboys and Indians or reenactments of war movies we had seen on television. The rocks in this park rose above street level and there were park benches that allowed a nice view of the Jerome Reservoir. Usually my grandmother would sit there while I played on the rock outcropping.�

Somewhere near this patch of rocks that to us grade schoolers seemed like a mountain but today is not much more than an outcropping was a plaque revealing that in that very area between Webb and Claflin George Washington's troops had an encampment.

I don't know if the copper or iron plaque is still there today, but it always made a big impression on me. Suddenly the history that I read about in books borrowed from the Eames Place public library seemed real and tangible. The men of Landmark history books with their colorful pictures �of �Revolutionary War� could have marched through The Bronx.

Reading �Bill Twomey's The Bronx in bits and pieces made me remember that play area. It also rekindled an interest in The Bronx's role in the Revolutionary War era. Twomey's collection of historical vignettes offer more than a fascinating run through history. They� give meaning to the different names of neighborhoods and street signs and offer a sense of what The Bronx was, not just in its Revolutionary War era, but in the years after.
�
This is a book that tells of a time when The Bronx was farmland and its rivers �had water mills. There have been maritime disasters off of its shores and artists have been lured to the islands off its coastline.
�
What this book could have had but doesn't is a map for each chapter offering readers an idea of where different places are. But that's fine with me. I used a combination of city �bus and subway maps to get an idea of where Twomey took me.
�
You can read The Bronx in bits and pieces starting from page one and work your way to page 280. But, �I have a feeling that many readers will hop around the book, exploring different chapters without any sequence and let their curiosity guide them. For those interested in the region's religious �history, there are chapters that look back at the borough's different places of worship. Some may find interest in details about �its schools, while athletes may be intrigued by the borough's history of sporting events and its different parks.
�
Perhaps the most fascinating is a chapter focused on the history that unfolded along The Bronx's shoreline. Think of it: some of The Bronx sits on the Hudson River, then there are the East River and the Harlem River, the treacherous waters of the Hell Gate and also Long Island Sound. All border The Bronx.

The first chapters I dipped into were pages devoted to the borough's old history. Most of us are familiar with the� Valentine-Varian House. It is �not in its original location. The house, today at Bainbridge and 208th Street, was located on what is now �Van Cortlandt Avenue East, �and Woodlawn Road, today's Bainbridge Avenue. The land was owned by the Dutch Reformed Church but then was sold to Isaac Valentine, a blacksmith, in 1758. Valentine had a blacksmith shop and tended a farm in the area and was part of the American militia during the Revolutionary War.
�
Glovers Rock in Pelham Bay Park, meanwhile, was named for John Glover who commanded the Massachusetts 14th regiment. When the British landed at Rodman's Neck on October 18, 1776, they numbered 4,000 and were intent on advancing to White Plains. Glover, who was from Marblehead, Massachusetts, and his men engaged the British and their Hessian mercenaries on what is now Split Rock Road. They delayed the British forces long enough for Washington to complete his retreat from Manhattan to White Plains.
�
Many of us know �Gun Hill Road today �as a busy thoroughfare. But before there was asphalt there was another world. Twomey tells us of a skirmish--again in the American Revolution--near Williams' Bridge, which ran over the Bronx River. The date was January 25, 1777 and George Washington's General Heath set cannon up at what today is the southeast corner of Woodlawn Cemetery--not far from the end of the Number 4 subway line today. Back in 1777, Heath fired two rounds at the British pushing them back. �Heath, based in Peekskill, directed raids in The Bronx, Twomey tells us.
�
It is interesting to think what The Bronx then was in its unborn state. Take away busy Jerome Avenue, and Kingsbridge and Fordham roads. Strip away the buildings and the elevated Number 4, 5 and 6 lines. What did Heath think of the place? What did the British--having sailed across the Atlantic to fight in the colonies think of it? What did they see? Did the Bronx River flow in the same pattern that we know today? Are the wilds of Van Cortlandt Park any indication of what the borough was like?
�
Fort Independence is where we have Giles Place today, but back then it was manned by Hessians, troops for hire from Germany. We also discover that Aaron Burr, then 21 years old, would make history in The Bronx's West Farms Square. Burr and forty of his men captured a British block house in 1779.

Twomey also� introduces us to Spy Oak--roughly where Westchester and East Tremont avenues are today. This old oak tree was used to hang a British spy. That spy was Lieutenant Nathan Palmer, who was hanged by General Israel Putnam. There are stories that this oak was haunted as Twomey �notes:�

The limb from which the spy was hanged allegedly withered when cursed by the doomed man and many a story has emerged from those passing this haunted locale. There was a much used well nearby and when two young girls passed the famed oak to fetch water from the well, a strange man in uniform approached them and when he was just a few feet away, he just disappeared.
�
That sinister� tree was cut down in 1933. Many of us would expect such a ghost story from a tiny Massachusetts hamlet, but hearing it about a Bronx locale seems almost wonderfully out of context or out of place. Which makes Twomey's collection of historical vignettes even more engrossing. Our opinions, expectations and characterization of The Bronx are challenged. Could Edgar Allan Poe--while staying at his cottage in The Bronx--have heard of this local legend of Spy Oak? Was he inspired by it?
�
Closer to our time,� today, �we learn of a Quonset-hut village set up in The Bronx. These were pre-fab homes for families between 1946 and 1952. I doubt any of these exist today, but I sure wish they did. What an amazing museum they'd make. Back then, they were used by the New York City Housing Authority to house veterans with �families. These units were known as the Bruckner Houses and then there were the Castle Hill homes. These homes had a wall dividing them in half and housed two families. Some even had small gardens.
�
Ever wonder why homes in Parkchester, built by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, have slightly larger bricks? The insurance giant--also behind notable projects like Peter Cooper Village and Stuyvesant Town--found it could save money by using larger building materials. Twomey says that builders cut ten percent off their labor costs by using larger bricks.
�
Having visited City Island many times, explored its coast with a rented motor boat and walked along the �Hudson� River near Spuyten Duyvil, �I was curious about what Twomey uncovered about The Bronx's coastline.
�
Edgar Allan Poe--whose cottage is at the junction of Kingsbridge Road and the Grand Concourse--headed to the High Bridge span that crosses the Harlem River. The High Bridge carried iron pipes with fresh water to Manhattan as part of the Croton Reservoir system that opened in the early 1840s, but the tall span was a bit of a� destination because of its� great view. Hart Island, off City Island, may in fact be Heart Island. The British naval cartographers charted is as Heart Island in 1775, maybe, as Twomey notes, because it is heart shaped. During the Civil War, Hart Island was a training facility and the city would later buy it for a potter's field. Hart Island was also used as a spot to isolate New Yorkers infected by Yellow Fever. Later it housed drug addicts. The Jesuits--who we know best for their Fordham University--built a chapel on Hart Island in 1939. The history of Hart Island gets more colorful. During World War Two, German prisoners of war were kept on the island, and later it was used as a Nike missile base during the Cold War.

The Bronx's� North Brother Island is some 2,000 feet off the borough's shore and was claimed by the Dutch West India Company in 1614. A lighthouse was built in 1869 and guided vessels through Hell Gate until the 1950s. After World War Two, there was student housing on North Brothers for GIs going to college. Not far from North Brother Island the paddle wheeler, General Slocum, had a notorious accident: �a fire� in 1904 �killed 1,358 people out for a day trip who were members� of a Lutheran Church in Manhattan.

Rikers Island, believe it or not, is part of The Bronx. The island, with its view of LaGuardia Airport's runways, is best known as the site for the city jail. It became a prison when the Blackwell Island penitentiary on Randalls Island fell into disrepair. The prison on Rikers Island was build in 1932. You may want to get a nautical map for some locales in Twomey's book. For example, near City Island there is Rat Island, which was a haven for writers and artists in the 1930s.

For many of us who grew up in The Bronx, Twomey's collection of vignettes of the borough's past will be a fun read and it is sure to confirm what we always knew. The borough is a rich brew� of history. Little did we know that it goes back to the birth of our nation. Who would have thought that George Washington's men raced back and forth over what today is Pelham Parkway or Fordham Road? For those who did not grow up in the borough, Twomey's The Bronx in bits and pieces will challenge the negative associations of the borough and may even kick up a more positive interest. You can almost imagine tour groups on buses cruising through The Bronx, searching out clues to� its Dutch, Colonial America, Civil War and 20th century histories. For me, it reinvigorated a desire to explore the old neighborhood again.

About the Author
Professor Dan Wei received her bachelor s degree in physics from Peking University in 1988 and her Ph.D. in Physics from University of California at San Diego (UCSD) in 1993 under the supervision of Professor Daniel P. Arovas. From 1993 to 1996, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher with Professor H. Neal Bertram in the Center for Magnetic Recording Research (CMRR) at UCSD, doing research in the field of micromagnetic theory for magnetic tape recording systems. From May to October 1996, she worked as a visiting researcher at the Data Storage Institute (DSI) of the National University of Singapore (NUS), where she built a model to simulate the read/write process in longitudinal recording hard disk drives. She joined the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Tsinghua University in November 1996 as an associate professor. A full professor since 2000, she is a senior IEEE member and a senior member of the Chinese Electric Association.

A tale of humiliation...and hilarity

I read this on the train to New Jersey and back in January, and I'm sure my fellow passengers were looking at me strangely, because I was snorting and saying, "ha!" Maybe it's just being around academics again, but I found this novel extremely funny, and I probably will search out more Lodge based on it.
The idea is simple: two professors, one at a small college in England, the other at a huge conglomerate in California, switch places for an academic year. The English professor, who is barely scraping by, longs for the materialism of American society; the American professor, on the verge of divorce, is trying to get his wife to see past his infidelities and acknowledge his worth as a husband. But people are people all over, and while both professors undergo quite a bit of culture shock, and cause some culture shock in the academic societies that they become a part of, the real story here is that it is a small world after all (hmm, funny that, but Small World is the name of the sequel to this novel.
One of the best sections of this novel is the depiction of a game called Humiliation, wherein you must name a novel that you have not read, but that you expect everyone else at the table/party to have read. The idea is that by admitting not having read a canonical text (especially among Literature scholars) you will be humiliated. It's the kind of intellectual party game that Seinfeld watchers just can't join in on, because it assumes a sophistication. Either that, or it's just snobbery.
The other thing that raises this story about similar counterparts (including Kingsley Amis' Lucky Jim, which I liked, but not as much as this novel) is the clever way in which it shifts form within the story. For example, section three is done entirely epistolary, while the ending is written in screenplay format. The novel is also self-reflecting, in a wry sort of metafictional way. You know that you're reading a story, and the story knows that you are reading it, but instead of pressing the point as in some of the more aggressive post-modern works, it does some sly winks and nods in the general direction of the reader.

Witty, accurate, compelling ("dated" misses the point)

As a British graduate student at UC Berkeley, the campus upon which "Euphoric State" is closely modelled, and as a graduate of an English university similar to "Rummidge," which doubles for Birmingham, I can vouch for the accuracy of Lodge's beautifully-wrought satire. I zipped through "Changing Places" in less than a day and can't remember the last time I enjoyed a novel so much. Lodge was a visiting professor from Birmingham who taught at Berkeley in the late 60s (Philip Swallow is thus a kind of alter ego), and thirty-two years after the action takes place, there's much that's still recognizable here. The satire of academic life in England and America hits the bullseye, the characterizations are broad but retain a sympathetic humanity, the drama is compelling and amusingly risqu�. There's also a nicely constructed vein of self-referential literariness that emerges on occasion, without being obtrusive. Accusations by some readers that the novel is "dated" miss the point - one might as well say Jane Austen is dated. Yes, the era of campus radicalism and sit-ins has receded into history, but the comparisons Lodge draws between English and U.S. campus life, academic politics and professors are still mostly valid. (Perhaps the biggest difference is that British academics have since come closer to their U.S. counterparts in having to worry about "publish or perish.") It's fascinating to note that many of the minutiae have not changed: British lecturers still give grades like Swallow's ultra-precise B+/B+?+; Berkeley's Telegraph Avenue ("Cable Avenue" in the book) is still a living monument to hippiedom (albeit somewhat commercialized now) and its People's Park ("People's Garden") survives unfenced and enjoyed by the community. Two caveats: readers addicted to neat-and-tidy Hollywood endings may be disappointed; everyone else should take care to read "Changing Places" first, proceed to "Small World," and then go on to "Nice Work."

A very funny novel and a wonderful read

David Lodge's "Changing Places" had me in stitches. It's such a funny book. The prose is highly readable, crisply written and races along so charmingly that it's hard to put it down once you've started. Although Philip Swallow and Morris Zapp are drawn from the two contrasting cultures they symbolise, they are never allowed to degenerate into caricatures. Both are highly real and believable characters, sharing much the same human frailties. While Zapp is unashamedly direct, hollow and crass, Swallow is rather more reserved, diffident, but with the same potential though not the guts for dishonesty. It is only by "changing places" that they become themselves, albeit in a different environment. Even the behaviour of their wives change when subjected to the opposite cultural influences. Admittedly, the setting of the "exchange" in the late 60s (with all the references to student protests and pot smoking in university campuses) has tended to date the book a bit. But who cares, when you derive such enormous pleasure, laughter and fun from reading what must seem like a novel for the ages. I can see thousands reading it 50 years into the new millenium.

W. David Pierce is Professor, Emeritus, of Sociology at the University of Alberta, Canada. His main research concerns a biobehavioral analysis of activity anorexia, taste regulation of overeating, and exercise-induced taste aversion.

Carl D. Cheney is Professor, Emeritus, of Psychology at Utah State University, USA. He teaches behavior analysis and physiological psychology, and has published widely in the experimental analysis of behavior. His current research is focused on the management of diet selection in a variety of species.

Book fell apart while reading first chapter

The spine separated from the rest of the book. The binding glue was a little more than what you would see on an envelope. I had to add my own glue. I need this book for at least the next two years. Having it literally crack open while reading the first chapter was very disappointing.

This book is amazing. There are up to date examples from the literature. Good allusions to every day life that help understand material better. Sonderful glossary. The material is just taught superbly. I am in a 300 level course in Learning during my first ever semester of exposure to Psychology and I love this book.
