I loved this book. I was unable to close the book as usual. If you like Jayne Ann Krentz/Jayne Castle Books you will love this book as well. She is one of my favorite authors..... and I don't have many that I will keep reading but I think I have read every book I own from Heather graham more than once. I finished this book in about 2 days and that's reading for about an hour maybe 2 hours. I just couldn't put it down.

Terrible editing. Good storyline

First let me say that the storyline was bananas! I loved it! It was definitely a page turner but every time I turned the page I saw horrible grammatical errors that truly messed up the flow of this book. The book was terribly edited as if spell check was never even used. The author continuously misspelled words that should have been easy to spell or picked up in a spell check.

With a storyline this fierce, the grammatical errors should not have even existed. It took away a lot from the book. If it weren't for the errors it definitely could have been a four star book.

The Teflon Queen is a hit woman!!!

I never read as like this kind action story. This is an action pack story with full of surprises. There are five different groups and Angela is the main characters and, also known as the Teflon Queen. She is a hit woman, hire by the top drug-lord in New York City. It's really amazing action and story.

T.Q., was a great read...a definite page turner. Silk has a way with a story line that keeps you glued to the pages from beginning to end. I wasn't sure if this book would rival the tears of hustler series...but ..oh yes..it does!. T.Q. should be on the top of your "to read" list...I LOVED THE CHARACTERS..LOVED THThe Teflon QueenIS BOOK!

Madness?

We are introduced to beautiful, aristocratic Lady Anne when she awakens in a foul cell. She is imprisoned in a Madhouse. She is apparently suffering from post birth psychosis. She has committed the grave crime of murdering and dismembering her infant son. The story grows more fantastic as we meet other characters and discover hidden motives for actions leading to the Anne's incarceration, release, and disappearance. This Victorian age tale is cleverly constructed and the twists are not telegraphed. The conclusion is disconcerting. I liked the episodic construct of the story. The story is told from the thoughts of the major characters. I stayed up late then woke up early to finish this intriguing read.

Compelling, Dark, Keeps you on your toes!

It has been a long time since I've read a book that impressed me to the extent that "The Medea Complex" has. When I first began the book I was mildly impressed, but somewhat aggravated by the actual insanity of the main character. The randomness of her behavior and the constant conjectures of Dr. Savage had me squirming throughout the first chapters. The squirming wasn't negative necessarily, I was enjoying the book but hadn't yet been truly drawn in.

My aggravation towards Dr. Savvage had taken root without any reason much before the book even began.

A few quotes that got my blood boiling:

"Women. Most of them are bordering on the limits of insanity at the best of times." ~Dr. Savage

"I know exactly what caused her insanity. Books. Women and their books." Dr. Savage

Then it happened. I spark of strangeness that I couldn't quite shake. Some happenings that had me questioning what was really going on. Who was right? Who was wrong? Who was the liar? Who killed that baby? I was lost in the book after that.

And I was confused and intrigued until the very end.

Overall This book infuriated me. Obviously, from the rating, you can come to the conclusion that this is actually a very good thing. I was angry at Dr. Savage, I was angry at the nurses, I was angry at Anne's husband, and darned if I wasn't angry at Anne too! I felt sympathy, and disgust, and confusion, and compassion for our main character AND the Dr. throughout the book.

Just when I had started to hate Dr. Savage with all my heart, he would do something genuinely, authentically kind. He would have an epiphany that contradicted his otherwise ignorant and sexist thoughts.

"Sometime simple human wamth can do wonders for a lost person." ~Dr. Savage

What the heck, Dr.! You're not supposed to be good meaning! You're supposed to be easily hated. Why are you making it so difficult to draw perfectly reasonable conclusions about you?

Back and forth. Back and forth. By the middle of the book I had no idea who to trust, or what to make of the situation. I was starting to feel like I was looking through a foggy lense at a puzzle that was poorly pieced together, and yet I was so curious and determined to understand WHAT was going on.

Author Rachel Roberts crafted a fantastic mystery, without making it seem a mystery at all. I was constantly asking myself questions, sitting back and considering the facts presented, and rolling my eyes at the ignorance of the time.

This book was intelligently written and there were no points throughout where I felt there were holes or weak story points. This was a strong, solid work made even more intriguing by the fact that it was based off of true events, true people, true horrors.

I actually feel compelled to check out all of the resources Ms. Roberts compiled at the end of the book for curious readers.

Ms. Roberts has created something that lures the reader into a fog of knowing some things, but not enough things. So, the reader draws their own conclusions based on personal feelings and even a bit of rambling from "Professional" sources. Consideration isn't made for alternatives until it's much too late to be prepared for the twist.

Without giving too much away (because you MUST read this book. RIGHT NOW) I'll say that I was flabbergasted by the way things progressed and the way things ended.

"The Medea Complex" will definitely find itself featured as one of the "Best Books Read in 2014" and Rachel Roberts is now on the list as one of my Favorite Authors.

I wish I could write all about this book. Just type it all out here in the review to prove to you how impressive and incredible this work is. But I don't want to give anything away. I want you to experience it for yourself.

This is a book to watch, and an author to keep up with.

Rachel needs a tough editor.

There is some good writing in the Medea Complex but too many typos, inconsistencies and other errors in order to receive a high rating. What Rachel needs is a tough, professional editor. I spotted at least 20 typos but the most harm was done with inconsistencies of tone. The subject matter of the book, the killing of a baby by a supposedly insane woman, is simply too dark for comedy but in some sections the tone changes to mad comedy. The dance held at the asylum and the scenes with inspectors Drum and Jones and superintendent Blake lapse into Monty Python comedy. Other problems like the use of slang such as “zip and nada” and modern words such as “smog” breaks the reader from the 19th century. To not end in a completely negative tone, the author produced strong images and well differentiated characters and must have researched the period and subject to some depth.

best book about Idi Amin from an insider

As opposed to the two previous reviewers, I thought this was an extremely well written and researched book. The author was a UN official during the 1970s and was able to draw upon his and his colleagues' experiences to form a very good portrait of one of the worst rulers in Africa's history. He starts with a very informative discussion of Amin's youth and career before he took over the Presidency of Uganda in 1971, destroying such myths as Amin's claim that he fought in Burma and India during World War II. He draws upon personal correspondance with former Ugandan President Milton Obote to provide a detailed account of Amin's coup and his foreign policy with other African countries in the 70s. Going in depth about Amin's search for oil in Lake Albert and his collusion in the assassination of Burundi's King Ntare V, Smith also provides the reader with an account of how bad life was in Uganda in the 70s. He justly praises the bravery of Makerere University students who stood up to Amin several times while condemning the lack of interest of other African politicians (except for Nyerere) and Western governments in putting an end to Amin's bloody regime.
The only criticism I would have of the book is the lack of any serious economic analysis of Uganda in the 70s - after all, it was Amin more than anyone else who turned Uganda from one of sub-Saharan Africa's richest countries to one of its poorest - but this is a minor quibble since that information is available elsewhere. This is a highly recommended book.

not much, but better than nothing

Given the fascinating, albeit monstrous, subject he had to work with, George Ivan Smith came up short. The book is written with less personality than Al Gore! Smith's writing is so dry that it is a struggle to wade through the slower parts(and there are many of them). Amin is infamous for his insanity, his humor, and for his brutality...Smith seems to want to focus more on his politics. Idi's politics weren't very interesting, hence the dullness of the book. Don't get me wrong, some of the madness is captured here. The trouble is that Smith can't keep his obvious bias and lack of comprehension out of the book. Idi Amin was a terrible human being, make no mistake about it, but Time magazine gave me more to hold my interest in one 1977 article than Mr. Smith manages in this 198-page yawn. Look elsewhere if you want to see the train wreck that was Idi Amin!

The Horror That Was Dada

This book does give the reader a glimpse of the evil of the Idi Amin regime that terrorized Uganda from 1971 to 1979. It also gives us some insights as to how such an evil dictator could stay in power for so long while perpetrating so many dreadful crimes. It was a combination of other black African leaders studiously looking the other way and refusing to condemn him -- Julius Nyere of Tanzania being a major exception, considerable moral and material support from wealthy Islamic regimes such as Libya under Gadaffi, and, of course, sheer terror against all who dared to speak against him. My biggest problem with the book was its turgid style of writing: I found it necessary to re-read many a paragraph before I got the gist of what it was all about.

This book was ahead of it's time. It took courage for Dr. Hansberry to write this epic history of one of the oldest civilizations on the planet. This book is one of the foundations of the black pride movement and inspired many scholars to continue in the field of African history.
