This book is designed to be read by scientists and other people. It has very few mathematical prerequisites; for example, it doesn't require calculus, linear algebra, or statistics. It starts by reintroducing the basics: What is a set? What is a function between sets?

That said, having a teacher or resident expert will be very helpful. Category theory is a "paradigm shift"---it's a new way of looking at things. If you progress past the first few chapters, you'll see that it's a language for having very big thoughts and making unusually deep analogies.

To make real progress in this book (unless you're used to reading university-level math books on your own) it will be useful to periodically check your understanding with someone who has some training in the subject. Seek out a math grad student or even a Haskell expert to help you. A growing number of people are learning basic category theory.

In order to really learn this material, a formal teacher or a professor would be best. Encourage your local university math department to offer a course in Category Theory for the Sciences. I can recommend this in good faith, because I went to special efforts to make this book available for free online. An old version of the book exists on the math arXiv, and a new MIT Press-edited version exists in HTML form on their website (see URLs below). That said, the print version, available here on Amazon and elsewhere, is much easier to read, if you want to get serious and you can afford it.

Good Examples, Suitable for Non-Mathematicians

Pros:
* Has lots of examples/questions with solutions, which help you clearly understand the concepts being discussed,
* Spivak builds up concepts gradually with lots of worked out examples,
* Requires little by way of mathematical background. Very suitable for non-mathematicians or those with basic mathematical background.
* An early version is available online in PDF format, so you can evaluate before buying. The book contains solutions after every "exercise", not so for the PDF.

Cons:
* Much of the early part of the book is motivated by "ologs", which I feel have doubtful utility in practical science. I feel this detracts from the overall presentation.
* The book takes a long time to actually introduce Categories, because Spivak takes the time to introduce mathematical background. However, this forces the reader wade through a lot of material, which is likely unfamiliar to his target audience and -- I feel -- is less useful in actually understanding Category theory. Overall, I found this "bottom-up" pedagogical approach makes it quite hard to see the forest (broad ideas & thrust of category theory) for the trees (a multitude of newly introduced concepts).

I gave up reading Spivak after Chapter 3 and switched to Awodey's excellent Category Theory book. Awodey's approach is "top-down", introducing categories almost immediately then examples to flesh out the concepts. It has a far more abstract and intuitive flavor in its presentation compared to Spivak, which is what I like most about it. However, it is also much denser than Spivak, and is a far more challenging read, but should still be accessible to anyone with first year college-level exposure to abstract algebra.

Seen through the eyes of a scientist and engineer category theory is a theory of connections. It provides a framework for organizing concepts that helps to orient the practitioner who is confronted with a system she wishes to model.

This book is the first attempt I am aware of that anchors categorical concepts into a context familiar to scientists. This is the pedagogy that is necessary but not sufficient for exposing the elegance of category theory to a scientific audience. This anchoring must also be faithful to the elegant tapestry of category theory. How this should be done is not immediately obvious as category theory is a vast framework not easily deconstructed.

Borrowing from a long tradition of teaching category theory to mathematicians David has reinvented the pedagogy by engaging with a community outside his own. This is both courageous and humbling.

A fine introduction to the subject

Although Norman Friedman's books tend to be cater to the hardcore naval enthusiast, "Submarine Design and Development" is pretty readable and concise. The book offers an interesting insight into the evolution of submarine design, technology, and tactics in the 20th century, detailed enough to keep the interest of the serious submarine buff, but not so overwhelming as to deter beginners. The first half focuses on the problems facing the submarine designer, an overview of submarine warfare in the two world wars, and the rapid growth of submarine design and technology during the Cold War. The second half is the real meat of the book, and focuses on submarine propulsion, sonar and communications systems, underwater maneuvering, and modern anti-submarine warfare.

This book focuses mainly on Western submarine design, and is a little dated by virtue of being published in 1984. Its still worth buying if you're into the subject, if only for the detailed cutaway diagrams of contemporary submarines, and clear explanations of basic concepts in technology and design.

A fun book

I bought Gradshteyn & Ryzhik because I had to write an answer to some homework problem in some physics class that I took. The problem had contorted itself into a perverse elliptic integral and its recovery was beyond my means, so I went to the bookstore, looked for something fat and Soviet, and found this gem. I forked over the cash for it, figuring that it was a long-term investment.
I took it home and dutifully plagiarized some of its lines to satisfy my physics professor. For the next few months, that was the mode in which I used this book: read physics problem, translate into elliptic or hypergeometric beast, look up answer in G&R, cover up my tracks, get 9 or 10 points on the problem. Occasionally, I would own up to having looked something up.
The book served its purpose well. Subsequently, I studied some integrals of the spinning top that were more or less right out of Nikiforov's book on special functions (another excellent source for those of you that would like to "earn" a PhD), and G&R stood well by its side. Indeed, I discovered how much fun it was to look up an integral whose complicated solution had been derived elsewhere, and then to look for patterns by analyzing the immediate neighbors of the given integral on the preceding and subsequent lines in G&R.
After I was done with answering questions from physics professors, the book sat on the shelf taking up more room than several of its neighbors put together. Nonetheless, its binding was good, its typesetting clear, and its terse and copious stream of forbidding integral forms was pleasing to the eye.
Some time passed, and one day I asked myself just what would motivate anybody to write such a large collection, so I started rummaging through its pages looking for a pattern. I realized that its organization was excellent (which would explain why I was able to find the answers for my homework), and I also found some sections that were just plain fun. The very beginning lists some sums of infinite series that can be derived during lunch or while waiting for a friend at a cafe (e.g. sum of k^3 = [1/2(n)(n+1)]^2 ). Then one can read about numbers and functions named after Euler, Jacobi, Bernoulli, Catalan... each line, more or less, is cross-referenced, so after you have given up trying to derive that darned product representation of the gamma function, you can go to the book in the library and see how Whittaker did it.
After about 15 years of owning this book, I am nowhere near done with it. If you like math, and you want insurance against being bored, this book just might do the trick. As a bonus, it puts cute matrix stuff in the back (e.g. the "circulant") which one can read when desiring a break from the integrals. I know the book seems expensive, but think of if as spending about two bucks a year on it.
I see that one can now obtain a CDRom version of G&R. An intriguing option, specially because it outputs in TeX; but really, how can anyone resist the large, stubby charm of its paper version?
G&R can help you to deal with members of the opposite sex. I once used it to scare away a girlfriend that was becoming much too annoying, by pretending to be thickly engrossed in the process of memorizing every single integral in the "special functions" chapters. As for my mother, she was particularly proud of me when I showed her that I could actually understand "randomly selected" pages from this book (I don't suppose that I am giving anything away by remarking that books open naturally on sections that have been previously examined).
For those of you that are concerned about home security, G&R is also a weapon. Some people surround themselves with baseball bats or, if they are particularly reckless, a handgun or two... I prefer to keep a fully-loaded G&R by my pillow, which I can hurl at any prowler at a moment's notice. Its shape is surprisingly well adjusted to the hand for the purposes of hurling, and if the covers are bound by a rubber band, the book maintains its shape quite stably as it sails across the room. Sell your Smith & Wesson and buy yourself a Gradshteyn & Ryzhik. You won't regret it.

Daunting at first but worth it.

Before it was much use, I had to read the section as to how the book is organized. As the other reviewers state the integrals are comprehensive and as far as I have used correct. The integrals are very useful, but this book includes many other features that I have found helpful as a graduate student. The sections on Hermite and Legendre polynomials are especially helpful for students of Electricity and Magnetism, Quantum Mechanics, and Mathematical physics (you won't have to hunt in several books to find what you need). The included identities for hyperbolic and trig functions are very helpful simplifying homework answers, mostly because of their comprehensive nature. This book is great because it seems to have everything and most people will not need to buy another table. The binding is good also, so it should last many years with normal care. This is a very good investment.

A gem

Let's keep this short and sweet. The book is probably THE best in what it claims to be, i.e. a compendium of mainly integrals, but all sorts of interesting stuff also manages to find its way in. Why some former reviewers exhaust their artillery in complaining about the CD is beyond me. This is a reference BOOK an as such unsurpassed. Buy it for sheer pleasure if for nothing else. While you're at it, you might want to take a look at Handbook of Mathematics by I. N. Bronshtein et al. which I ordered from Amazon in Germany a moment ago. That one also comes with a CD and I'm getting curious about how it will turn out to be. But Gradshteyn and Ryzhik - the BOOK - are a must.

The would-have-been queen and her consort didn't eat the once-in-a-generation, magical golden apple, and didn't marry and live in Appleton. Nearly-queen Phemie simply disappeared. Now, three women converge on Appleton, each drawn for different reasons. And when a shabbily dressed but drop-dead-handsome young man appears, an earthquake causes a landslide that cuts Appleton off from the rest of the world. Odd things begin to happen. In a small, walled orchard, a single golden apple appears, of a variety thought to be extinct. It will give town and townspeople a second chance at prosperity. For a special few who believe, it offers a chance to realize their hearts' deepest desires. Tuttle's lovely story moves at Appleton's gentle pace and, like it, abounds with charm and magic. This is a movie just waiting to happen!

In the hands of the right director, this book could become a lovely, magical romance along the lines of "Practical Magic." In book form, the myth of the Apple Island overshadows the cast of characters (the one shining exception to this is Kathleen, the librarian). And the "encounter" between Ashley and Ronan was awkward and puzzling, happening out of sync with the pace of the story. Not to mention unnecessary...the sexual tension the author built during the first part of the story intrigued me much more that any actual dalliance could have.

The redeeming quality of the book, and the reason I gave it 3 stars, was the lovely way the author wove the legend and the present day together. Her descriptions of landscape and architecture were vivid and enchanting, a lovely picture painted with words. I would recommend it for light reading...and have my fingers crossed that some visionary Hollywood producer can see the cinematic potential here!

Four and a half stars, really

Once again, I must say I wish that Amazon offered a half-star rating option, because this book is really more like a four and a half star book. It's *so close* to being a five-star book, yet it doesn't quite go the final distance for me.

The story starts when a young American teenager, Ashley, arrives in the dying Scottish town of Appleton--so named for its once-famous apples, and also for its peculiar shape, in which the town is on a chunk of land only connected to the mainland by a small "stem" of rock. Two other American women also live in the town: Nell, a widow who moved here after the death of her husband, and is trying to put her life back together by restoring an old house, and Kathleen, a librarian who moved here from London in the wake of a faile d marriage. After the town is cut off from the mainland by a rock slide, strange things begin to happen, and it slowly becomes apparent that a supernatural tide is sweeping over the island. The three women must then uncover and fix a mystery that happened decades ago in Appleton's past to set right what has gone wrong and return the town to the real world.

There's a lot of good stuff in the book. The tale of a small town that appears quiet and sleepy on the surface, only to have hidden depths that come to light as the town itself slowly succumbs to supernatural influence, is one of my favorite types of stories, and this one is done passably well. As I was reading it, it was actually very strongly reminding me of much of Stephen King's work, especially IT, but also Bag of Bones and even Pet Sematary; after all, "small town hiding a supernatural secret" is one of his favorite themes. In King's hands, this tale could really have been spectacular; as it is, however, the book suffers from a couple flaws that hold it back from achieving true greatness IMO.

Probably the most central flaw is the fact that Tuttle's three characters never come together to form what King would term a "ka-tet." Their story arcs intersect with each other, and sometimes overlap, but unlike, say, the Losers' Club in IT, they never join. This is really damaging, unfortunately, because first of all, it makes the plot more disjointed and harder to follow, and second, it blunts the intensity of the conflict--figuring out how to get the town back to the real world before it's too late. Instead of getting the sense of the three of them united as a powerful force determined to find out what went wrong, how to fix it, and how to (or even if it's possible to) deal with the supernatural manifestations happening all around them, their arcs are just kind of thrown in piecemeal and a significant fraction of the impact is lost. Furthermore, putting them together as a ka-tet could have helped strengthen their characterization and difference from each other by allowing them to play off one another; as it is, the characterization really wasn't as crisp as it could have been IMO. (I wasn't actually clear on why exactly Ashley needed to be in the story at all; I'm having trouble thinking of anything she did that couldn't have been handed off to Kathleen or Nell just as easily).

Another problem was her introduction of significant chunks of the town's backstory in the form of academic works which were interpolated between the chapters. While the information was good, the way it was presented did contribute to the at-times-disjointed feel of the narrative. It might have been better handled if the information was material the three characters discovered themselves doing research to attempt to figure out what had happened; this could also have provided opportunities for character bonding and interaction as they work together to uncover the material.

The book also at times was not as good at setting scene and establishing atmosphere as it could have been; the scene where Kathleen meets Ina's mother...and grandmother...and great-grandmother.... in particular, stands out to me as one that wasn't as powerful as it could have been; possibly because I was comparing it with the scene in IT where Beverly meets Mrs. Marsh/Kersh which I found one of the creepiest scenes in the entire book.

If I sound somewhat negative, I don't mean to--it's only that I felt this book is so, so, so good and with a few tweaks it could easily have vaulted into the ranks of the superlative. Still, it's a very, very enjoyable read and one that I will probably reread in the future.

About the Author
Jack Dvorkin is a Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Geophysics at Stanford University, California. His primary research interests are theoretical rock physics and its practical applications as well as computational rock physics, and he has taught dozens of industrial rock physics short-courses worldwide (USA, Canada, Colombia, Brazil, India, China, Japan, Norway, Germany, Italy). Dr Dvorkin has published around 150 professional papers and has also co-authored two books including The Rock Physics Handbook (Cambridge, 2009).

Mario A. Gutierrez is a Principal Geophysicist at Shell Exploration and Production Inc., working primarily on the application of seismic- and rock physics-based methods for evaluating and risking the presence of reservoir rocks and hydrocarbons to support business decisions and recommendations on oil and gas exploration projects worldwide. Dr Gutierrez holds a PhD in Geophysics from Stanford University, California, and has previously held leading applied research and operations positions at Shell, BHP Billiton Petroleum, Ecopetrol and various seismic contractors, working on rock physics and seismic attributes modeling, reservoir characterization, shallow geo-hazards and pore pressure prediction.

Dario Grana is an Assistant Professor at the University of Wyoming. He worked for four years on seismic reservoir characterization at Eni Exploration and Production in Milan, then moved to Stanford University, California, where he received his PhD in geophysics in 2013 - during which time he also published six peer-reviewed journal papers and presented at several international conferences. Dr Grana's main research interests are rock physics, seismic reservoir characterization, geostatistics and inverse problems for reservoir modeling.

I found the book useful. It contains
several examples and it clarifies how to apply rock physics models to
real studies. It bridges some of the gaps from the previous rock
physics books.
