Do you believe in magically ever after?

Enchanted is the second, long awaited anthology of erotic stories from Yellow Silk. Four of the best writers of modern erotic fiction have created a different story of the magical enchantment of love and passion. Excellent story telling, guaranteed to stimulate not just the mind. This anthology is strictly for romantic adults.

Passion and Mystery
"Thank you Yellow Silk Dreams for collection of romantic stories that took me on a journey of passion, and mystery… I liked all the stories and my favourites were Spellbound by Jocelyn, and Jacqueline’s On a Summer’s Afternoon. I can’t wait for more stories..." - Aneta Horne, Townsville

Romantic, Sensual, Playful, Steamy...
"Four stories from four different writers, each of whom has a very different take on what 'enchanted' means in an erotic tale. I found Cindy's story full of romance, Gemma's to be a sensual treat and Jacqueline's to be playful, while Jocelyn's was simply steamy and hot. Whatever flavour you're looking for - it's here." - Chris Katyla, author

"The only thing worse than rich bitches is rich witches,"

Linden is a Kansas witch, an outside in her witch coven, who, after swearing off Human males as lover material, has taken a leap of faith to find her Magus, (her male counterpart and soul mate) and casts a "booty call" spell, for a one night stand to remember.

Seeing him from across the room she's hit with a double whammy.
From finding him at last. you know the "him" The one who could ring her chimes, Crisp her bacon, make her feel as if she stood in a puddle of water and someone dropped in an electrical cord...with it still plugged in the wall~ (yea that good) Annnnnd
Lust that was tangible enough to touch. and She wanted to touch him...bad.
I love his line after he walks up to her...

"You didn't have to be-spell me to get me into your bed," he looked her up and down, planted his hands on her hips and pulled her up against him. "All you had to do was ask."
DAD-GUM Wish I had that effect on men like that.

Needless to say, the two share more in common than she suspects more than attraction or the desired−Headboard banging, Bed levitated kind either.
I'm no spoiler, but if you want an EXTREMELY well written story of love, and passion of the paranormal kind, then you need to read Spellbound by Jocelyn Modo

one in the stories in the "Enchanted" (Yellow Silk Dreams) anthology.

Huh!
By Chitwah
I don't have a clue what this collection of odd short stories is all about--sorry! I read two, and I have to assume it's a woman thing. I got it because my wife enjoyed the movie "Ella Enchanted," and I somehow thought this book was related, you know, kind of like the zillions of novels that have "Twilight" in the titles are related (another favorite of my wife's--look, I don't ask; we've been married many decades, raised kids, seen gradkids and greatgrandkids--do you think I haven't learned anything in all these years!)

THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!

Anne Bishop returns to her world of the Others, as humans struggle to survive in the shadow of shapeshifters and vampires far more powerful than themselves...

After a human uprising was brutally put down by the Elders—a primitive and lethal form of the Others—the few cities left under human control are far-flung. And the people within them now know to fear the no-man’s-land beyond their borders—and the darkness...

As some communities struggle to rebuild, Lakeside Courtyard has emerged relatively unscathed, though Simon Wolfgard, its wolf shifter leader, and blood prophet Meg Corbyn must work with the human pack to maintain the fragile peace. But all their efforts are threatened when Lieutenant Montgomery’s shady brother arrives, looking for a free ride and easy pickings.

With the humans on guard against one of their own, tensions rise, drawing the attention of the Elders, who are curious about the effect such an insignificant predator can have on a pack. But Meg knows the dangers, for she has seen in the cards how it will all end—with her standing beside a grave...

Chapter 1

Windsday, Messis 1

Eager to join his friends for an early-morning run, Simon Wolfgard, leader of the Lakeside Courtyard, hurried toward the terra indigene Wolves who were using trees and shrubs for camouflage as they watched the paved road that looped the Courtyard. Actually, they were watching the man who was riding on the road at an easy pace.

Blair growled. It was a soft growl, but the human suddenly scanned the area as if his little ears had caught the sound.

Nathan added.

Simon said, a little concerned about their focused attention on a human they knew fairly well.

Karl Kowalski was one of the human police officers who worked directly with the terra indigene to minimize conflicts between humans and Others. Because of that, he had been labeled a Wolf lover and had had his share of conflicts with other humans. The latest incident had happened the prior week when a car "accidentally" swerved and almost hit Kowalski while he was taking a bicycle ride before work. Because the terra indigene viewed that as a threat to a member of their human pack, Simon, Vladimir Sanguinati, and Henry Beargard-members of the Courtyard's Business Association-decided to allow the human pack to ride on the Courtyard's paved roads.

Simon had thought all the Wolves had been told about the Business Association's decision-especially Nathan, who was the watch Wolf at the Liaison's Office, and Blair, who was the Courtyard's dominant enforcer-but this was the first time any of the humans had ventured to ride on a road that still had Trespassers Will Be Eaten signs posted as a warning.

Blair's growl wasn't as soft this time.

Must have been loud enough for human ears, because Kowalski started to pedal a little faster.

Oh. Bicycle. Now Simon understood the real focus of the Wolves' attention, the reason for their excitement. Humans had ridden bicycles up to the Green Complex as well as a few other places in the Courtyard, and the Wolves had been intrigued by the two-wheeled vehicles. But those instances had been about transportation to or from a task. This could be something else.

Jane, the Wolfgard bodywalker, asked hopefully.

Nathan said.

Blair asked.

Nathan replied.

Simon thought Nathan's opinion of police work was skewed more toward hopeful than accurate. Still, they could offer to play. If Kowalski didn't accept, they would just enjoy a run. But . . . bicycle. Simon really wanted to chase one.

The Wolves charged up the road, Simon and Blair in the lead as they swiftly closed the distance between the pack and their play-prey. But would they have a game?

Kowalski looked back. His eyes widened-and he pedaled faster.

Yes!

Simon said.

Jane surged ahead of the males, pulling up alongside the bicycle's back wheel in seconds.

Nathan said.

Jane snapped, clearly offended by Nathan's unwanted warning. She moved up a little more, now in position to play-bite Kowalski's calf.

Kowalski glanced at Jane and pedaled faster. Instead of going over the bridge that would take them into the Hawkgard section-and commit the human to the big loop within the Courtyard's three hundred acres-Kowalski turned onto the road that ran alongside the Elementals' lake, heading back toward the Green Complex.

The Wolves ran, maintaining their distance even when Kowalski slowed down while going up a rise. They took turns pacing the bicycle and pushing their prey to run and run. Or pedal and pedal. As they reached the intersection with the Courtyard's main road, Kowalski swung left toward the Green Complex instead of turning right toward the Market Square.

Most of the pack, having slowed to a trot as their prey tired, circled back toward the Wolfgard Complex. Nathan headed for the Market Square and the Liaison's Office, where he would keep track of the deliverymen and guard Meg Corbyn, the Courtyard's Human Liaison. Simon and Blair followed Kowalski until they reached the Green Complex. Then Blair continued on to the Utilities Complex while Simon dashed for the water trough in the common area that formed the open center of the Courtyard's only multispecies complex. He lapped water, then shifted to his human form and dunked his head, flinging water as he stood up and tossed his dark hair away from his face. He splashed his arms and chest, then grinned when Kowalski parked the bicycle and approached the trough warily.

"That was a great game of chase!" Simon said happily. "You understand how to be play-prey."

"I do?"

"Yes." Simon cocked his head, puzzled by the human's wariness. Hadn't they just played, had fun? "Want some water?"

"Thanks." Kowalski splashed water on his face and neck, then on his arms. But he didn't drink.

Simon pondered the not drinking for a moment. Humans were clever, invasive predators who had recently shown the terra indigene once again why they could never be fully trusted-not even by one another. But physically they were so much weaker than other kinds of predators. This not drinking, for example. Nothing wrong with the water in the trough. Someone had already drained yesterday's water, using it on the potted tree and other plants in the open area, and refilled the trough with fresh water for drinking and splashing. Humans would drink water pumped from the well if it was in a glass or a bucket or some other small container but couldn't drink the same water from a shared outdoor container?

It made him wonder how they had survived as a species long enough to become such a problem.

"So, who doesn't understand about play-prey?" Kowalski asked, rubbing a hand over his face.

"The female pack. Every time we invited them to play, they stopped riding their bicycles and asked if they could help." Simon spread his arms in a "what's that all about?" gesture. Then he pointed at Kowalski. "But you invited us to play, and we all had a good run."

Kowalski snorted a soft laugh. "Well, I sure had a good run."

"Since the females can't pedal as far or as fast as you, maybe they could play chase with the puppies." The pups would learn how to run as a pack without the risk of being kicked by real prey.

Simon studied Kowalski, who studied him in turn.

"I'll talk to Ruthie," Kowalski finally said.

They both heard the clink of glassware and looked toward the screened summer room below Meg Corbyn's apartment.

"Must be later than I realized," Kowalski said. "I'd better go home and get cleaned up for work."

Simon watched the man walk toward the bicycle-and the summer room. For a moment, it looked like Kowalski was going to go in and talk to Meg, and Simon felt his teeth lengthen to Wolf size as his lips pulled back in a silent snarl. But Kowalski just raised a hand in greeting, said, "Morning, Meg," and rode away.

Simon walked around the trough, then stopped suddenly when he realized he was naked in his human form. It had never mattered until Meg came to live in the Courtyard. But humans reacted in various ways to seeing one another without clothing, even when clothing wasn't needed for protection or warmth. Meg had adjusted pretty well to friends shifting to human form to give her a message or answer a question before shifting back to their preferred furred or feathered form, but it was different with him-maybe because their friendship was different from any other she had with humans or terra indigene.

Most nights, he slept with her in his Wolf form. They had their own apartments, but those places were connected by the summer room and a back upstairs hallway, and more and more it was becoming one den instead of two. But they weren't mates in the same way Kowalski and Ruthie were mates. Then again, terra indigene Wolves mated only once a year, when females came into season. Meg did the bleeding typical of human females, but she hadn't shown any physical interest in having a mate. Except . . .

She'd asked him to go skinny-dipping with her a couple of weeks ago. Both of them naked, in human form. She'd been nervous about being in the water with him, and she seemed scared after he'd kissed the scar along the right side of her jaw-a scar made by the cut that had saved the Wolfgard in Lakeside as well as many other Wolves throughout the Northeast Region and even beyond.

He'd kissed her before-on the forehead once or twice. But when he'd kissed that scar, he'd felt a flutter of change inside him, and in the days that followed he began to understand on some instinctive level that he wasn't quite the same as the rest of the Lakeside Wolfgard. Not anymore.

Maybe it wasn't just for Meg's sake that, after the kiss, he'd invited her to play a Wolf game despite their both looking human. Then she wasn't afraid anymore. And since then . . . Well, it wasn't lost on him that, in summer weather like this, human males wore next to nothing in and around their own dens and no one thought anything of it.

"It's hot upstairs," Meg said, not raising her voice because she didn't need to. His ears might look human, but he was still a Wolf and could hear her just fine. "I brought some food down here for breakfast."

"I'll take a quick shower and join you."

He hurried inside and up the stairs to the bathroom in his apartment. Washing his hair and body didn't take long, but he stood under the shower, enjoying the cool water falling over him as he thought about the complication that was Meg Corbyn.

He had brought her into the Courtyard, offering her the job of Human Liaison before discovering that she was a blood prophet, a cassandra sangue-a breed of human females who saw visions of the future when their skin was cut. She had escaped from the man who had owned her and used her, and Simon and the rest of the terra indigene in Lakeside had taken her in.

That sounded simple but it wasn't. Nothing about Meg was simple. She was the pebble dropped in a pond that was the Lakeside Courtyard, and the ripples of her presence had changed so many things, including the terra indigene who had befriended her. Because of Meg, the Courtyard's residents interacted with humans in ways that were unprecedented-or, at least, hadn't been considered in centuries. Because of Meg, the terra indigene throughout Thaisia had tried to save the rest of the blood prophets who had been tossed out like unwanted puppies by the humans who had owned them. Because of Meg, the Lakeside Courtyard had a human pack who provided an additional learning experience for terra indigene who had a human-centric education and needed to practice their skills with humans who wouldn't take advantage of mistakes.

Because of Meg, he had the uncomfortable feeling that a little bit of being human had become attached to and inseparable from his Wolf form.

Plenty of human females over the years had wanted to take a lusty walk on the wild side and have sex with one of the terra indigene. And plenty of terra indigene had been equally curious about having sex in their human form. But that was about pleasing the body for a night and walking away. Or, for the Sanguinati, it was about using lust as a lure in order to feed off the blood of their preferred prey.

Having sex was different from becoming someone's mate. Mating was serious business. It was about pack and family. Some forms of terra indigene mated for life; some did not. Even among the forms that usually mated for life, the bonds didn't always hold. Simon's sire, Elliot, never talked about why his mate had left him. And Daphne, Simon's sister, had told them nothing about her mate or why she had shown up in Lakeside alone just days before her pup was born.

No, the mating bond didn't always last, and most of the time, the repercussions were small. A pack might break apart if the dominant pair split. Some might leave for other packs, even other parts of the continent. But ordinarily, a species wouldn't become extinct if a mating bond broke-and that could happen if his bond of friendship with Meg became something more but couldn't survive being something more, couldn't survive a physical mating. He knew it. Tess and Vlad and Henry knew it. Maybe some of the humans knew it. But he didn't think Meg knew it, wasn't sure she would be strong enough to carry that weight on top of what she had been asked to do already.

She had been hurt by the humans who had caged her and used her. Hurt in ways that made her fearful of the human male form. While he occasionally wondered if having sex with a human would feel different if the human was Meg, he wasn't willing to risk their friendship, wasn't willing to break the bond they already had. So he needed to be extra careful now for her sake, for his sake, for everyone's sake. How much human would the terra indigene keep? The Elders had asked that question without specifying if they meant human population, human inventions, or the intangible aspects of a form that were absorbed along with the physical shape if you lived too long in a particular skin.

Simon shut off the water and dried himself before pulling on a pair of denim cutoffs.

When the Elders had first asked that question, he thought they expected an answer in words. But after the recent war that had broken the Cel-Romano Alliance of Nations on the other side of the Atlantik, and the Elders' decision to thin, and isolate, the human herds in Thaisia, Simon understood that the answer would be shaped by what the Elders learned from the things that happened in and around the Lakeside Courtyard.

Meg fussed with the dishes on the small table in the summer room, but her mind was still replaying the image of Simon and Karl Kowalski standing by the water trough, talking. Simon had looked happy. Karl had had his back to the summer room, so she hadnt seen his face, but hed seemed tense. She wondered why Karl would feel tense about something that pleased Simon so much. Then again, a Wolf and a human didnt often see things the same way.

A shot to the heart would have hurt less
By RabidReads
It’s with deep sadness that I bid adieu to one of my f-a-v-o-u-r-i-t-e series. But, don’t despair just yet, Anne Bishop has announced that she will be returning to THE OTHERS world in 2018! I enjoyed ETCHED IN BONE considerably more than book 4 because the scope of the story was much narrower which means that we get lots of Meg & Simon, and less of the rest of Thaisia. The plot was also milder in nature, and that was both a plus and a minus. Yay on account of it being more character driven, and nay since things end with a whisper instead of a bang.

The focal point of this novel was Cyrus James Montgomery. He’s a con artist, and sees Lakeside as easy pickings because he has an in with his brother, mother and sister already in residence. Jimmy’s presumptuous, arrogant, and just plain daft if he believes that he can hide behind human laws in the Courtyard. The terra indigene mete out their own brand of justice; it’s ugly and barbaric, and in my opinion the punishments fit the crimes. CJ’s schemes escalate until he does the unthinkable. A shot to the heart would have probably hurt less!

The citizens are busy picking up the pieces of whatever is left in the wake of Namid’s claws and teeth. Cel-Romano has practically fallen off the map, most of the land has been reclaimed by the wild country, and food rations abound in the surviving cities. The Simple Life folk and the Intuits are thriving, and the cassandra sangue are still a work-in-progress, but for the average human, life is hard. Meg’s female pack make inroads with the Others by breaking bread together for the first time, and two Elders observe it all like some twisted science experiment.

The author doesn’t yank the rug out from under us as far as epiphanies go although, she does touch upon a few items that readers have been musing over such as what happens when a prophet’s old scars are reopened. There were also several delightful moments which I’d found to be lacking in the previous volume. Skippy will surprise you, and Corbyn makes a HUGE faux pas—I’m pretty sure that she only lives to tell the tale due to the fact that she’s the howling not-Wolf. And, yes, something DOES happen between Simon & Meg on the romantic front however, don’t set your hopes too high because… baby steps!

Anne Bishop could have probably written ten more books in this series, and I still wouldn’t be entirely content, but overall ETCHED IN BONE was a happy finale.

A great story marred by unnecessary sexual assault
By Amy Cissell
spoilers below...

I love the main characters in this story - the are well-crafted and well-developed and the way they grow and change with the series is fantastic. Meg Corbyn, the main character, has grown up so much over the series. She's still skittish (as would you be, had you been a virtual slave pimped out so people could cut you up and get prophecies), but is developing into a strong young woman who is getting much better at asking for help and channeling her gift through her prophecy cards instead of through cuts in her skin.

Twyla Montgomery is my favorite human character and this book really showcased her strength. Having to watch her three adult children screw things up so badly (at least 2/3 of them) and to stand firm so that they have to stand on their own two feet (or not) had to have been painful (especially since there are grandchildren involved).

Simon and Tess are my favorite non-humans, and I kinda want to be Tess when I grow up. (Mostly for the hair, but a little bit for the "harvesting of human lives with her brain" thing she's got going on.)

The bad guy - Cyrus James (Jimmy, or "that Cyrus") - is bad. He is lazy, petty, manipulative, and cruel. The way he treats his younger sister (who was adopted, as we are reminded frequently by him) is abhorrent. He is physically, mentally, and verbally abusive to her, to his own wife, and to his children. There is no doubt what-so-ever that he is a bad, bad man. Also not in doubt? That his son Clarence is fixing to grow up just like daddy.

This is well-established by the way they treat people they perceive as weaker and less-powerful. Their lack of perception is showcased by who they perceive to be weaker and less-powerful (small doesn't mean weak, especially when you're dealing with Others).

At no point did I say to myself, "Hey, self! That Cyrus seems kinda bad, but I'm conflicted as to whether or not he deserves the kind of punishment that the Others mete out."

Nor did I say, "I wonder if that shoplifting kid who is mean to his sister and who wears child-sized brass knuckles before beating up (or at least attempting to) smaller children is growing up just like daddy?"

The characters of both Cyrus and Clarence were carefully built and they both made me very uncomfortable with their slimy, greedy, stupid cruelty. (Anne Bishop's character crafting is amazing. It's a testament to her skills as a writer that she can cause me to have a visceral reaction to Cyrus with just a few strokes of her pen...errr...keyboard. Which is why what follows is even more upsetting and unnecessary.)

And then it was revealed that Clarence was offering his younger sister money to kiss his friend's bums and had been offered money for young Frances to do more than that. As if the exposition that Clarence was considering "trying to pimp his younger sister" (direct quote from the book) wasn't enough, later, in an effort to provide a distraction for his father, Clarence pulled down the pants of another little girl (Sarah), held her, and yelled out "Show 'em your bald [pejorative for the female external anatomy], [female dog/common insult for women]!"

Neither of the items mentioned in the previous paragraph were necessary. Clarence was already well on the road to Reprehensible Town, and making the child a sexual predator (which is never really addressed, other than Monty asking his sister-in-law - the mother of Clarence and Frances - if she knew Clarence was starting to pimp his sister and finding out that she was) is not only unnecessary, but lazy and gross. The fact that Sarah's public assault is mentioned again only in passing (therapy was recommended, but Clarence wasn't sent to sex-offender juvie, just "boys ranch in the woods" juvie) is even worse. If you're going to make a child a sex offender, then it needs to be addressed because that is some serious stuff and not just a kid going down a dark path.

To me, that was almost worse than the way That Cyrus behaved. It is well-established that he seems everyone, but particularly women, as objects to be used. He steals or coerces food from his sister and leaves barely enough for his children and wife. His mother's purpose is to be manipulated by either him or his children so that she can also be a source of food and money (Twyla is not having it, though. I love me some Twyla). He helps some guy sneak into Lakeside for money without caring what exactly that man wants (answer: to either retrieve or render useless something that's his and is beyond his reach). (Further answer: that "thing" is his ex-, a person, and I'm pretty sure we all know what's meant by "...if I can't take it with me, I'm going to make sure it's of no use to anyone.")

That Cyrus facilitates other crimes as well, and then uses his own son as a distraction when he (that Cyrus) actually does his own crime. (Such initiative!)

This crime (SPOILER) is the kidnapping, physical assault, and sexual assault of Meg. (Forced sexual contact is still assault, even if the penis doesn't go in the vagina.)

I've always been a little uncomfortable with the correlation between the cutting visions and sexual arousal, because it equates pain and pleasure in a non-consensual way, ensures that sexual pleasure for the blood prophets is morally questionable, and takes sexual agency away from the cassandra sangues.

There was absolutely no reason for that Cyrus to sexually violate Meg. He was already bad. That was established. She was already in a world of hurt - kidnapped, locked in a trunk where she received various bumps, bruises, and accidental cuts, and then cut and forced to prophesy against her will by someone who was unskilled and didn't know how to properly administer the cuts.

Sexual assault wasn't necessary to establish either her dire straights or his reprehensible character.

This was a very good story marred by laziness. The story-line was well crafted, the characters well developed, the world is still fascinating, and the overall series moved forward with this character-heavy novel.

I loved the story and the series
By Robert I. Katz
I hesitated between a four and a five star rating because the book does have some flaws, but in the end, I loved the story and the series, so I decided to be generous. This book has a smaller plot than the last few. The fate of the world does not depend on what happens here, though it did seem possible that the Elders might destroy humanity, at least on the North American continent, depending on what lessons they could learn from the situation in Lakeside.

Simply, Lieutenant Montgomery's brother Jimmy has come to town. Jimmy is a loathsome crook. He's a pimp, a thief, a racist, a grifter and a rapist. He's always looking for an angle and he finds one in Lakeside. I have only three real criticisms, as much of the series than of this book in particular. First, it is hard to believe that humanity could have reached its current level of civilization, with flat screen tv's, cars, computers and cell phones, while their population was restricted and essentially dominated by the Others. It is stated that many previous civilizations have been wiped out when they grew too rebellious. I don't think it at all likely that humanity would have ever been able to organize and grow sufficiently for this level of development. Second, it is stated that humanity is restricted to small cities and isolated communities, cannot stray off the roads and cannot travel at night. Yet, there are road side diners and gas stations conveniently located everywhere, and there seems to be a lot of traffic going back and forth. This seems contradictory.

Third, and this is a criticism that applies to Anne Bishop's other series (particularly the Black Jewels) as well: the good guys have so much power that the bad guys have no possibility of winning unless the good guys do something insanely stupid, and since there is no plot without both conflict and tension, they always do. In this book (spoiler alert!), Meg is carefully guarded and Jimmy is known to be a very bad character. Nevertheless, the inevitable kidnapping takes place, followed by the equally inevitable rescue.

I still love the characters and I like the story a lot, but this sort of stuff does get a little tiresome. Nevertheless, I'm eager to read the next in the series. I understand that it will focus on other characters than Simon and Meg. That's fine. Simon and Meg have come to a satisfactory place and there are other very interesting characters in this Universe.

The Royal Book of Jousting, Horsemanship, and Knightly Combat: A Translation Into English of King Dom Duarte's 1438 Treatise, by Duarte

For the first time, the King of Portugal's 1438 treatise, LIVRO DA ENSINAN DE BEM CAVALGAR TODA SELA, will be available in English. Never before translated even into modern Portuguese, Antonio Franco Preto has delivered a superb rendition of this most important treatise. The ROYAL BOOK OF HORSEMANSHIP, JOUSTING & KNIGHTLY COMBAT is a chivalric treatise written by a renowned medieval king who was an expert in his subject matter. Superbly educated, the king wrote about fundamentals of medieval horsemanship--including specifics about clothing, shoes, saddles and tack--about the seat and riding securely in the saddle, details about the medieval hunt, about how to joust, including roles for the knight's assistants and squires, about different kinds of lances, about wrestling and fighting with the sword. More than this, the work is a chivalric treatise on the par with Geoffrey de Charny's Book of Chivalry or Ramon Lull's Book of Knighthood & Chivalry. Its minute examination of the human spirit, in all its glory and failings, is woven with consummate skill into the text. D. Duarte discusses the moment of impact, for example, lance against lance, and about different ways that men fail at the point of impact. This failure is then discussed in the context of life. This work is a prize of medieval literature and Portuguese history that has languished in obscurity owing to its difficulty. But Dom Duarte was considered to be one of the great kings of Portugal, and his work, dedicated to his wife, left Portugal with her as she departed for Naples with the king's death. When the French overran Naples in 1495, the book was transferred to the French National Library, which it remains today. Although several old editions have appeared in Portugal, they were in the original language and were extremely difficult. Antonio Franco Preto has now rendered this text not only accessible, but preserved its elegance as well. It will be an important book to many: students of chivalric literature, the equestrian arts, jousting, Western martial arts, or Portuguese history.

About the Author
King Dom Duarte of Portugal (1391-1438) reigned for only five years (1433-1438), but is known as one of the great Portuguese king.He is timely because during his day Porgtugal struggled with relations between the Arabs and Europeans, and his forward-looking grasp of living together is as important today as it was during the 15th century.

Teaching to ride well in every type of saddle
By Sadyll Chic
This book was written by the King Dom Duarte of Portugal in the early 15th century; a text that has long been overlooked by horse masters and scholars alike over the centuries. Usually when Duarte's work is mentioned, it is in brief and only covers a singular topic. Due to these limited translated excerpts, there is a common misconception in the community of interest that this book is just about jousting. I assure you, it is not.

Basically "Bem Cavalgar", a short hand term for the work, is a 15th century book of advice on or teaching how to ride in every type of saddle. Duarte speaks from his own experience about having a firm seat and to be well mounted when performing tasks from jousting to hunting and every day riding. He also covers the use of proper equipment for the specific task. Many modern equestrians may see bits of advice that come remarkably close to what they've been taught from their earliest riding lessons.

Duarte, like many rulers of his age, was philosophical, being well versed in mythology of the past and the religion of the day. Duarte covers many of these aspects in his own musing about "The Will" and why sometimes riders fail or succeed because of the types of will and desire employed in riding or other activities.

Amusingly enough, Duarte was very concerned about appearance and looking good while you were in the saddle. If one had an especially difficult horse, he explains how the rider could "disguise" the difficulty by straightening a hat or bit of clothing until the horse was under control so as not to appear unsafe or concerned about falling; style and elegance.

The book contains Duarte's advice and thoughts on weapon handling. His advice is sound regarding work from the ground before trying it from horseback. His belief that if you didn't feel safe and confident working with a weapon on the ground, you wouldn't be safe or confident with it on horseback. This follows the teachings of some of Duarte's contemporaries like Fiore di Liberi (Italian), whose system approaches the basics (wrestling and weapons) from the ground and eventually teaches the student to use the combat techniques from horseback a skill that Duarte laments later in his text that the young noblemen seem to be losing due to their pursuit of the ladies and courtly romance.

Martial techniques that are discussed in whole or briefly: work with the lance, the sword, and wrestling. Probably not as detailed as most students of historical western martial arts would like, but those experienced in equestrian martial sport will probably realize that much of it is common sense and practices that many of us have been doing for years.

In comparison to other works on the horsemanship of antiquity, Duarte is at times sketchy about details and without images for guidance; the reader is left to draw their own conclusions in regard to visualizing how certain movements are performed.

About the translation (adaptation as it is not a literal translation), I've been studying the work by Joseph Piel (he transcribed the manuscript into a more "readable" document) for years and know what a difficult and monumental task "Bem Cavalgar" was to translate. Mr. Preto has done a commendable job in bringing this difficult work to English, in full, for the first time. He has also added a bit of information to the beginning of the book to share a chronicler's description of Duarte and share the history of Portugal with the reader to add a bit of context to Duarte's work. (Obrigado)

While I have the highest regard for the content of the book and the effort it took to bring it to the masses, as a bibliophile and a design professional, I must now share my concerns regarding the presentation of this work.

In comparison to other works on horsemanship that offer a modern translation, I found the work to be missing two key components, a facsimile of the original manuscript or a text version of same and/or contemporary artwork to add visual breaks for the eye. While this may not seem to be an issue with most readers, for a scholar, it doesn't allow for comparison of the translation with the work. Sometimes errors occur and without a source to for comparison, you will never know.

When I was finally able to hold the book in my hands, my first impression was the disappointment I felt with the low quality of the binding and the flimsy paper stock. The faux leather had air bubbles under it where the glue didn't adhere or didn't cover the boards. The gold leaf text was practically illegible (same for the dust jacket). The whole thing would probably have been better served by a cloth cover and a regular serif font for readability rather than trying to mimic a manuscript.

A major issue was that before I had even finished my first reading, the binding had come unglued and the end papers had begun to separate from the cover. I have purchased several books over the years in the same price range and have never had this happen. The watch phrase is "handle with care" when reading to avoid damage to the book.

Advice to the publisher: Quality Control.

Having said that, I am pleased to see the work finally come to light as the information is more important than the binding. So, if you are a medieval horsemanship enthusiast or interested in the knightly arts even if you don't have a horse, I definitely recommend that this book be a part of your equestrian and medieval studies library. I would also make an attempt, if you have any foreign language skills (Latin, Portuguese, Arabic, etc...), that you also acquire a copy of Joseph Piel's transcription:

LIVRO DA ENSINANA DE BEM CAVALGAR TODA SELA EL-REY DOM EDUARTE

(it's extremely rare) and/or the French study:

"tude d'un trait d'quitation portugais du XVme sicle:Livro da ensinana de bem cavalgar toda sela du roi Dom Duarte" by Carlos-Henriques Periera, (2001).

Note: I've edited this review to add the book titles and to add the term adaptation.

NOTE: there are translation errors.

Important work
By Dean V Maynard
This is a very valuable and important work for anyone interested in historical horsemanship; especialy jousting. It is a great pitty that this book is so poorly produced (esp for the money!) & the binding is particularly bad (otherwise this is a 5 star book). Those who want it will still buy it however as it is the only English translation published that I know of.

Dom Duarte is Wonderful!
By Cynthia Jeney
For those of us who are interested in the history of equestrian arts this book is not to be missed! The charm, warmth, and confidence of the medieval king of Portugal is almost Zen-like. The introduction is thorough and substantive, explaining why the treatise lay untranslated (and largely ignored) for so many centuries. It is well worth the read -- a practical, philosophical, and ideological window on a unique world. Enjoy!

Islamic Civilization
By William Garrison Jr.
"Aspects of Islamic Civilization: As Depicted in the Original Texts" by A. J. Arberry (1964, 1965, 1977, 2010), hardback & paperback, 408 pages. Chapter contents: (1) Arabia Deserta [Arabia at the time of Prophet Mohammad c. 600 A.D.]; (2) The Speech of Allah [various selections from the Koran]; (3) The Sunna and the Successors; (4) Wisdom from the East; (5) Science from the West; (6) La dolce vita [of the caliphs]; (7) Religious counsels; (8) Mystical moments; (9) Lyrical interlude ["The Arabs always looked back upon their ancient desert poetry with fierce if sometimes uncomprehending pride."]; (10) Faith and doubt; (11) Parable and anecdote; (12) The Art of Hafiz; (13) Two modern Egyptian poets [Hafiz Ibrahim & Ahmad Shauqi]; & (14) The revolt of Islam [Arab poets' poetry condeming Islamic government corruption]. The author opined: "It was the wide vogue of mysticism, far more than formal theology, that enables Islam to survive the appalling catastrophe of the Mongol invasions" (p. 16)... "Islam receded in the west already from 732, when Charles Martel hammered back the troops of 'Abd al-Rahman between Tours and Poitiers... The decline of Islamic civilization threatened utter ruin even before the advance of European imperialism added to debility humiliation.... The [Islamic] political rebirth was heralded in the nineteenth century and after by a cultural renaissance. The main stimuli which started this movement of revial were external: The French Revolution, and British liberal idealism. The literary and artistic models, the secientific, technical, even the political examples, were to a great extend furnished by Europe and the United States. The very impulse to study Muslim history, and to appraise the cultural achievements of medieval Islam -- chief sources of pride and inspiration to the new generations of fervent nationalists -- this too had its origins in western Orientalism. These facts go a long way to account for the love-hate relationship which characterizes the attitude of many Muslims today towards the West." Rather than being an analysis of the Muslim religion, Arberry's book deals more with how the Islamic religion has impacted Islamic literature, and thereby its culture. (For more of a political analysis, I suggest: "The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam" by Robert Spencer.)

Review
"The author's own background as an organ player in a soul and rhythm-and-blues band gives this aspect of the novel originality and depth…Recommended." (CM Magazine 2010-06-04)

"Will strike a chord with aspiring band members...The trials and tribulations of being in a rock band and deciding whether to keep old friends, no matter how geeky, is at the heart of this hi/lo novel. Realistic fiction at its best." (TriState YA Book Review 2010-09-01)

"The well-plotted story may appeal to reluctant readers." (The Horn Book Guide 2010-09-01)

"If you know a struggling reader who loves music and instruments, then this is the book for them!...This novel moves very quickly, which will keep young adults interested...[and] as Chamberlain did a great job capturing the teenage voice of his main character, Duncan, I believe young adults will be able to connect with Duncan and, hopefully, learn a valuable lesson about the dangers of changing solely for acceptance." Finding a place to fit in has always been a problem for Duncan. He has some close friends, but let's face it, they are all pretty nerdy. He and his best friend, Jason, have been working on making a goofy film based on Raiders of the Lost Ark, but lately Duncan has been thinking that's totally lame. He needs some new interests, and maybe some new friends.

Duncan is surprised to find out Jason has answered an ad for a bass guitarist in a rock band. When Jason says he answered it for Duncan and encourages him to go for it, Duncan decides to take a chance.

One of the band members named Grant speaks up for Duncan and convinces the group to give him a try. Just like that, Duncan is part of Primal Thunk. At the same time, he learns that his father has started dating a woman named Terry. It is kind of a surprise, but she seems nice enough. He even discovers that she is into some fairly hip music, and she introduces him to her musician brother. Things are looking up. Then again, maybe it's too good to be true.

ROCK STAR by Adrian Chamberlain is a fast read, centered around heavy metal and rhythm and blues. Chamberlain takes a look at a teen searching for his niche. It takes some trial and error, but the character finds his direction in the end.
