A User Friendly ETF Resource For Amateurs & Pros

I have spent the last month reading and using the Visual Guide to ETFs. The book is a valuable and user friendly resource on ETFs.

Author David Abner did a commendable job of balancing the accessibility of the material so that amateurs and professionals can gather value from it. Don't know what an ETF is or how it differs from a mutual fund or closed-end fund? This book has you covered. Need detailed instructions on using Bloomberg or other third party resources to perform individual ETF analysis? The book will guide you through the process.

Besides being accessible to all types of experience levels, another strength of the book is its format. As the title suggests, the Visual Guide to ETFs provides a healthy balance between the written and visual presentation of ETF knowledge. A reader may read the book traditionally, just use the illustrations and screenshots or combine the two in a multi layered approach - it's a custom experience for each reader. I found this presentation approach refreshing and a helpful way to reinforce concepts that may be best explained in more than one format. (i.e. written and visual)

Technically oriented and not for beginners

This is an excellent book for those in the ETF industry. It is definitely not for the common ETF investor looking to build a portfolio of ETFs. There are a lot of technical trading language and terms which the common person will not understand. The book is thorough in discussing the trading aspect of ETFs and recommend it for ETF portfolio managers.

Great ETF Reference Guide

Dave Abner proves yet again that he is one of the most knowledgeable individuals in the ETF industry with his second book on ETFs. As an industry veteran, he has told the ETF story over and over again for institutional clients around the world. This is proven in his new book, as Abner does a great job of simplifying and explaining some complex concepts in the ETF industry that some of the largest institutions down to individual investors have been asking about for years. Concepts such as the Flash Crash, short interest, creation/redemption and ETF settlement.

As a trader in the ETF industry, I have used the book as not only a reference for myself, but for my institutional clients to go through and further their understanding of the ETF market. It has also been extremely helpful in training new employees not only in the ETF space, but how to utilize Bloomberg in their everyday tasks.

Problem Based Learning at its finest! Worth every penny

I ordered this to supplement first aid step 3 and have not been disappointed. I learn by reading cases, diagnostic workups and treatments and that's exactly how this review series is formatted. Kaplan really gets it that active problem based learning is the most effective method for studying... Especially for a test that emphasizes clinical management more so than random questions about the Krebs cycle or chromosome translocations or specific tumor markers.

What's worked well for me: bringing first aid for step 3 to study during MSIV rotation downtime, then make notes of areas I'm weak on, then going home and studying those cases in Kaplan. I also use and highly recommend onlinemeded , a series of free video lecture reviews. Best of luck to all you folks on our final board exam! Finish Strong and keep trucking!

Many pages of essential reading and I even found it to be interesting and very engrossing.

This is a set of 2 books, and both are full of case studies. I think that the best way to review this book is to type one out for you here since there the "Look Inside" feature is not available with these books.

Chief Complaint: Chronic cough

History and physical examination: A 28 year-old woman comes to the clinic for evaluation of intermittent cough over the last few months. She recently started running several times a week and has noticed that the cough is much worst after she returns. She has noticed occasional wheezing as well, particularly on cold days. She is a nonsmoker and is otherwise healthy.
She is a well-develpoed, well nourished woman in no acute distress. Her temperature is 36.7C (98.0 F), BP 108/70 mm Hg, pulse64/min, and respirations 18/min. Physical examination is unremarkable.

Differential Diagnosis: 1. Exercise-induced asthma/exercise-induced bronchoconstriction
2. Gastroesophageal reflux
3. Postnasal drip (upper airway cough)

Assessment: This clinical presentation of exercise-induced cough is a common variant of asthma. Symptoms are often worst after exercise is completed. The normal PTFs (performed at rest) do not rule out this diagnosis. A methacholine challenge test should be performed to confirm this diagnosis. However the clinical diagnosis is probably adequate, and the patient may be empirically treated.
Other common noninfectious causes of coughs include allergic rhinitis, postnasal drip, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. However, there is no evidence to support these other causes in this patient.

Treatment Plan:
1. Inhaled beta agonists before exercise, such as albuterol
2. Cromolyn is sometimes used as an alternative.

Fabulous

The photography alone makes this book worth buying. It's a wonderful coffee-table book. But, I also found it to be surprisingly educational. The use of photography combined with compelling text, allows for an intimate look into a sub-culture not easily understood and one that is quickly disappearing. It is both timeless and thought-provoking.

Fascinating read

I must say that this book had me fooled. I almost thought it was the story of a real pimp. The pictures are better than the story however and one should be very careful about trying to "gain game" from this book. Great for living room display.

i hate to say it but...

I loved this book. Don't get me wrong. Pimps are not heroes and they aren't victims of society either but this picture book is gorgeous. The photography is awesome. You may not want to keep this book on your coffee table or you will have some explaining to do when company comes over but it is fascinating.

The original sword-and-soul is back and better than ever

Charles Saunders' Imaro was the start of something new, the Afrocentric fantasy adventure—sword-and-soul as Saunders dubbed it. Taking inspiration from what he loved about Robert E. Howard's Conan, discarding what he hated and adding what he needed, Imaro was made for black readers who wanted a hero they could better identify with while showing that a magical Africa was just as viable a setting for fantasy as a magical Europe. Bad luck and poor sales prevented Imaro from becoming better known though, and every time Imaro returned it was short-lived.

Now Imaro is being published by people with a passion for sword-and-soul and is now digital, hopefully allowing it stay in print this time.

This edition is quite different from the original DAW Books printing. Minor changes and additions to the text abound. There are two major changes though: the complete deletion of the chapter Slaves of the Giant-Kings and the addition of the chapter Betrayal in Blood. Saunders has spoken at length about the removal of Slaves of the Giant-Kings with its disturbing parallels to the Rwandan Genocide and how it might be mistaken for supporting it. In it's place is a new chapter, The Haramia, giving a totally different account of how Imaro meets Tanisha and the Haramia and fleshes the Haramia characters out some more. Not spoken of as much is Betrayal in Blood which bridges the gap between the chapters Horror in the Hills and The City of Madness (originally the fifth chapter of the DAW edition now the first chapter of the second book. This was an excellent move since in the DAW edition a huge series of events happen between chapters and are explained in Imaro's thoughts. With Betrayal in Blood we get the show, not tell treatment with a lengthy adventure filling in the gory details we were denied previously. It's a vast improvement. The somewhat earlier ill-fated Night Shade Books edition has most of the same changes as this edition, but Saunders claims there are minor differences between this one and the Night Shade one.

So if you want pulpy, gory, horrific, swashbuckling, and pulse-pounding adventures in the spirit of Conan but in a refreshing African setting with Africans as the protagonists instead of fodder give Imaro a read. It improves on the DAW and Night Shades editions considerably and brings some needed color to heroic fantasy. It's about time an ebook was released and I await further digital releases from Saunders.

Imaro Book 1 is the e-book edtition of Charles Saunders "sword and soul" novel which was first published by DAW Books in 1981. The original DAW cover made comparisons to the Tarzan books which provoked a complaint by the Burroughs estate. Which was a poor choice of blurbs since the Imaro stories resemble the Conan adventures more than any other fictional work. The book is also a collection of stories which Saunders published separately in the 1970's. I should also mention this is the best cover yet for Imaro.

The stores take place in Nyumbani, a fantasy version of ancient Africa. The hero, Imaro, grows to manhood in a tribe called the Ilyassai, who herd cattle, but are quick to defend their traditional lands on the plains. Because Imaro's mother left the tribe and returned pregnant with him, he's called "The Son-Of-No-Father",i.e. a bastard. Although Imaro grows to be a giant of a man, he's looked at by scorn in his own tribe. But the tribe's sorcerer sees something powerful in him and desires to eliminate the young warrior.

In "Kinives of the Turkhana", Imaro is still a young man who has not proven himself to the tribe. He's captured by an enemy tribe, the Turkhana, led by a sorcerer who demands human sacrifices. But his powers prove to be no match for Imaro, who nearly wipes out the enemy tribe.

"Place of the Stones" is the next story. Imaro is betrayed by a sorcerer in his own tribe. But he manages to redeem himself by the end of the story. Imaro also discovers he's the target of the demon lords of Nyumbani who want him dead. There's also a chilling "living dead" sequence in this story.

Imaro leaves the plains only to be captured by a roving group of bandits in "The Haramia". But Imao ends up joining the band and eventually becomes its leader. He manages to save the rest of the band from destruction from a magic statue . He also finds the love of his life, Tanisha, in this story. Tanisha comes to the band as a captive, but decides to stay with Imaro after she falls in love with the big man.

The final story, "Betrayl in Blood" has Imao's bandits on the run from two kingdoms. He decides to create his own kingdom with his warrior band, but two sorcers have decided to kill him. They almost succeed. Much of this story is taken up with a battle between the two kingdoms trying to destroy the Imaro's band of renegades. There's even an attack by river demons right out of a Roger Corman movie.

The only real complaint I have about this book is the tendancy to put African terms into italics even after the noun has been explained. Thus you find such passages which slow down the narrative:

"Unconsciously, Imaro curled his fingers around the hilt of his simi, the short, iron sword sheathed at his side. He reluctantly uncurled his fingers and raised the tip of his arem skyward in a gesture of acknowledgement. Often were the times he wished Kanoko were not Ilyassi...."

But the author's descriptive passages are bright:

"Ages ago, the misshapen pile of crumbling masonry was a building, an edifice of colossal proportions. The gigantic stone blocks from which it had been constructed once fit together with immaculate precision. But that time was thousands of rains ago, as humans measure time. Now, the structure was only a mound of aging stone, futilely defying the passage of the rains even as the name of its long-dead builders had long since been forgotten. It hulked in the midst of the Tamburure like a monument to a time so distant that even the land surrounding it had changed."

Two more Imaro books were published in the 1980's: The Quest for Cush (1984) and The Trail of Bohu (1985). I'm looking forward to e-book publication.

Awesome sauce! As someone who enjoys the John Carter series, the various works of David Dalglish and the God of War video games Imaro was right up my alley with it's combination of daring swordplay, death defying action and supernatural threats. As an African Imaro reminds me that there are plenty of people out there who remember that heroes come in all shades and configurations. As in the aforementioned works of fiction, Imaro is also a tale of a warrior searching for belonging in a world hell bent on crushing him, however this is a tale told from an uncommon angle. Rarely if ever has a black man been so powerful, so driven, so complex and yet universally identifiable. At one point or another ever reader has identified with Imaro's sense of isolation, his battle against his own emotions and the pain of loss. It's a shame the second and third book have yet to see a digital release... If Sword and Sworcery or Fantasy are your thing pick this up, you won't be disappointed.

Known simply as "The Work," Byron Katie's methods are clean and straightforward. The basis is a series of four questions addressed to your own lists of written assumptions. Whether you're angry with your boss, frustrated with your teen's behavior, or appalled at the state of the world's environment, Katie suggests you write down your most honest thoughts on the matter, and then begin the examination. Starting with, "Is it true?" and continuing with explorations of "Who would you be without that thought?" this method allows you to get through unhelpful preconceptions and find peace. Katie suffered from severe depression for more than 10 years, but in 1986, after moving into a halfway house for women with eating disorders, she discovered a new way of thinking and working through tough emotions like sadness, anger, jealousy, and despair. Katie's philosophy, which she calls "The Work," consists of four questions that seek to untangle complex emotions by changing the reactions and thought processes of the person seeking help. Instead of focusing on feeling anger, Katie suggests what she calls "inquiry," or assessing why we feel anger toward someone or something and how we can react another way. Loving and Ending Suffering

Suffering comes in all shapes and sizes, but one of the key components of suffering is often fear. I have often experienced fear and anxiety in a variety of situations, even though I knew my worries were unfounded and irrational. I often ruminated on my problems to the point where I felt like I was constantly having an anxiety attack. I turned to things like alcohol and other drugs to keep my mind off the problem at hand, but that only delayed the inevitable. When I would sober up, the problem was still there and I would have not made any progress on solving it. This book details a simple, step-by-step guide on how to go through "The Work" toward healing and ending suffering. It has literally been a lifesaver for me. It is practical and actionable, and I use these methods in my everyday life.

I also found 21 Things You Should Give Up To Be Happy. It is a book that is just as practical and actionable as Loving What Is, but it takes a slightly different approach. It posits that giving up concepts and ideas is the best way to achieve happiness. Using advice in this book along with "The Work," I have been able to clear my head and focus on my goals. I no longer worry about what other people think, and I've started planning my life more around concrete goals and less around the aimless wander. 21 Thing You Should Give Up To Be Happy talks about the "aimless wander" as one thing you should give up. My anxiety was always on high alert, but it didn't need to be!

I'm glad I found these two books, because I've been to produce much more positive effects throughout my life. I am working toward my goals and my mind is more stress-free than it's ever been. Neither of these books offer new age mumbo jumbo. They are written by real people with real life experience who have been able to construct effective action plans that work for a wide variety of individuals. I am just one success story in a sea of others.

I could see the wonderful person my husband is

I want to thank you for The Work! It is a gift;-)

Let me share with you how the work changed my life.

The work saved my marriage. Before, I was charging a lot of my husband, but after work, using the turn around, I saw that everything that I prescribed for my husband was really for me to do; and what I thought he should give me actually, I should give myself! I could see the wonderful person my husband is.

The work has made the relationship with my children so much easier, smooth, light. I can see that I am what I accused them of being. I learn so much with my children. They have so much patience with me. They are generous and kind to me. They are real teachers. When I get angry, my 4 year old daughter, Ana tells me, "vai fazer Byron Katie, Mam�e!", wich is something like "Go do Byron Katie, Mom!". You are very much like my mother, Davi, my 3 year old son, when he sees you on the computer screen, he calls: "Grandma!" ;-) I watch you a lot on youtube!

The work has improved the relationship with my parents, my brothers and sister. Examples: before, I fought a lot, I felt unloved, excluded, forgotten, abused. Now, I feel loved, included, remembered, and I respect myself. And when I found out that my mother has cancer, the work opened my mind, I was also able to see the opportunity for us to say goodbye; make the most of every moment with my mother while she is alive.

The work transformed the relationship with my stepdaughter and my husband's ex-wife in a funny way. Before there was so much drama. Now that everything is simple and straightforward, they are gone from my life. My stepdaughter does not want to visit us and the ex-wife of my husband stopped sending aggressive and threatening messages. We are spared;-)

The Work applied to my work and relationship with my co-workers opened my eyes to so many good things I missed busy being a victim. Before, I thought I was treated unfairly, all the work was left to me (I was preparing the course, I was preparing the tests, I corrected the tests etc.), everyone was making money at my expense ... Now, I also can see the incredible opportunity I won, I am very happy to have full autonomy to manage the course the way I want !! I do not need to discuss anything with anyone, I do not need to prove anything to anyone, I do not need to account to anyone. I do not waste my time demanding work of others. I do everything as I please. I discovered that I love my job and I don`t want to leave. I discovered that my work gives me great pleasure: the readings, the preparation of the tests, the organization of the course, wow;-) exciting !!!!

I do The Work every day! The Work gives me such peace. I feel grateful and lucky the work found me too ;-)

A great book, with a very penetrating way of looking at things through the lens of 4 basic questions

A great book, with a very penetrating way of looking at things through the lens of 4 basic questions: Is it true? Can you be absolutely sure it's true? How do you react when you think that thought? Who would you be without that thought?

I suspect to gain the most from this book, one would have to do the exercises, and complete the worksheets. I didn't, so my review might be lacking in this respect. I did find Byron Katie's approach insightful, and worth thinking about. I also found the book repetitive, annoyingly so, and eventually I gave up in frustration, feeling that I had gotten the gist, without having truly plumbed the depths of "The Work," as Byron calls it.

The book is designed to help those who have suffered great difficulties in their lives, particularly at the hands of others, and who have a tendency to blame those others for all their problems. Blaming is a roadblock on the road to self-discovery, self-understanding and personal transformation. For that reason, this could be a tremendously useful book, if you haven't already dealt with these problems through therapy or some other path that has freed you to think for yourself without needing someone to use as a scapegoat for your own troubles and dissatisfaction.

Has some good ideas but not perfect

I was a bit disappointed with the lack of plans that would suit our needs. I want a more country styled house with a corner kitchen, mudroom, pantry of some sort, a main floor bedroom and a second room on the main floor that could serve as a guest bedroom/den. There are a few plans that suit my criteria but not many. We actually did find a plan in here that we may rework to suit our needs so I think the cost of the book was worth it.

The other drawback to the book was the lack of detailed measurements in most of the plans. They give you a general space of most large rooms but will leave out the details in the foyers, closets, baths etc. Our house needs to be wheelchair friendly so these numbers are important. Yes, you can get a general idea but it is a time issue to figure out the scale for each house.

The "extras" in the book I find rather useless. They tell you very general information regarding flooring, tile, bathrooms, etc. But none of the information is specific. For example in the bathroom section they say "Don't rule out anything that may seem unattainable; there's technology out there that will astound you . . ." All of this is fluff. The book would have been better without it in my opinion.

All in all not a bad book. It just could be better.

Same as the others

This book had great ideas and things to think about when building home which i really like. There are variety of home plans divided into sq footage. The cons: I purchased another book by the same publisher (I was warned in another review post) and there were many similarities. If you are purchasing any home plan book i recommend using this as only a guide for building exactly what you want. I did find my home plan in this book but we are doing quite a few modifications to make it work for us. I'm sure that this goes against the copy right but after all the changes its really not the same house.

Kind of Disappointing

I feel like I saw more variety on betterhomesandgardens.com, a lot of plans are repeated 2 or even 2 times, with just different looking exteriors. I mean it was an inexpensive book, so hey why not at least look at some more pictures before deciding on something, but if you're seriously looking for floorplan ideas this is kind of a let down. I also ordered a free catalog from [...] and got way more ideas that I liked from that, and it was free!

Nice cover, good layout.

This password book measures 4 and a quarter inches by 6 inches so it would fit in a pocket or purse easily. Also, I like the leather-effect cover design, it looks really cool! The pages inside are laid out well. There is one page for each website, and each page has a large 'other' box which I will will use to write new passwords when I change my old ones (which I try to do quite often).

It doesn't have alphabet tabs, but personally I think this is a good thing; with other journals Ive used, I had loads more 'A's than 'X's for example and I would run out of space for some letters. Instead, this book makes you write the website name sideways in the top corner, so you can find your login details for a particular site quickly just by flicking through the pages.

It's OK. Looks nicer in the photos than it is.

For what it is, this seems a little overpriced. I think $4.99 would have been fair. The cover looks nice, but the paper is about that you would find on a mass market paperback, maybe thinner. Since it doesn't lay flat, you almost have to crack the spine to write in it. On the other hand, the page layout is logical and there is lots of room for longer passwords and site addresses. If you change passwords every few months, you'll need to buy a new one relatively soon.

It's not going to hold up under a lot of handling. It definitely wouldn't hold up long in a handbag, backpack or briefcase (although stashing a book of passwords in a handbag or briefcase is a bad idea anyway.

I've have been willing to pay a lot more for a hard cover and the ability to move/rearrange pages (and purchase refills).

Fabulous But Doesnt Have A Hardy Cover

I was surprised that it didn't have a more solid cover. It's thinner than the cover on a mass market paperback. I suspect it won't hold up beyond a few months of regular use. If your goal is to fill it out and lock it in a safe deposit box for reference I highly recommend it. The format is the best out there.
