A very powerful play addressing the South African situation.

In My Chindren! My Africa!, Fugard tells the story of a white South African girl who becomes involved in debates with a black South African boy and his teacher, but as the racial tension increases, tragedy becomes inevetable. Fugard tells a powerful story which not only addresses the racially charged South Africa he is from, but race relations and the need to realize the differences between people of race are only skin deep.

Dry, Outdated Material

I used this book for an online class and was thankful that we didn't use it for our discussion boards; we only used it for the test portion of class.

To begin with, a majority of the material supported in the text is backed up by research that was conducted in the 90's, even though this is the 8th edition to the book. The chapters overlap, which in principle is fine, but happens way too much and because of this you're practically reading the same argument over and over again with each chapter. The text doesn't make any "groundbreaking" claims (it only reinforces knowledge that anyone has with a few PSYC courses under their belt) and shy's away from controversial health psychology subjects (such as the controversial subject of pain medication). Because of all of these facts, the book is incredibly dry and is a pain to read through if you have to read it. Our professor has acknowledged this as well and is using a different book for the next semester.

I purchased this book for class. The cover was nice, new, and fairly thin. However, when you open the book, it felt like I was reading column in the newspaper as there was so many words written on ONE page. It took me forever to find what I want to find in the book even after using the index. There was just so many words jammed in one page that it did not amuse me to even read it. But I guess that's why the book was not thick or heavy. I should have purchased this book as an online book instead.

Far too technical and bland...

Well, I took a Health Psychology class online to pass some time while I prepare for nursing school in the Fall. I assumed the class was easy more or less, but I was quite wrong, mostly due the teacher's reliance on this boring, over-citated, confusing textook.

First of all, I do respect the author's work, Shelly Taylor, but she needs to dumb down and really start condensing her ramblings to a more healthare-oriented PRACTICAL level, instead of reams of theories upon theories and outdated citations. The seventh edition, which the one I bought, had no color at all, only grey and blue-green turquoise colors. There is alot of research-oriented material, which is okay if you need to write a thesis or grad paper, but there is no consistency between giving so much research citations and actually learning the health psychology in my opinion.

The chapters are WAY TOO LONG!! Each chapter on average can be 19-24 pages, with only 1 or 2 pages of actual juicy learning between all the references and case studies. She often sounds elated with redundant voculabulary and uses "ameliorate" often which is quite annoying!

Some material is useful if you can find it and have lots of patience before dozing off. Most of the work is repetitive and almost comparable to a filler in a careless meat product. This author probably just wanted to fluff the chapters with jargon and random trivia to make it more expensive.

All in all, unless the professor force feeds the class this book in lectures, stay clear of Shelly Taylor's health book. Simply not worth the money.

To compare Kershaw to Winkler is like comparing an apple to an orange

To compare Kershaw to Winkler is like comparing an apple to an orange. Kershaw is a magnificent writer who seeks to look for trends and patterns, focusing on the whole forest in order to see its contours. Winkler, on the other hand, delves into the forest, checking out each tree, and only then positing his analysis and interpretations. Details are important! I have read many books on this period, and this is by far one the best I have read. It is a detailed, intelligent, thought-provoking look at the ALL the factors- and not just some- that lead to the age of catastrophe. I feel lucky in finally having an English version of this book. I have waited a long time and hope his other works will also be translated.
This is as good as it gets.

A work by a German historian who knows who was right in World War II

This book by a prolific German historian who was born in 1938 was published in German in 2011 and in English in 2015. It is a very detailed account of of events during the years named--becoming more detailed as we approach World War II. I found it admirable since it does not make any excuse for Hitler or for those who were responsible for his attaining power. And while Stalin's crimes are recognized the author, unlike some Germans,,in no way seeks to excuse Hitler or to suggest that it was not providential that Hitler was destroyed by the cooperation of the good guys of the West combining with Communist Russia. The book is the second volume of a four volume history starting with the dawn of German history and going up to the present, but as far as I know this volume is the only one of the four translated into English. Some of the account of American history shows a lack of familiarity with American politics but I don't think it is seriously misleading. It took me 11 days to read this work but I felt it was time well spent..

The Thirty-Years War- Take Two

A lumbering account of the what happened in Europe for about thirty bad years of the last century.

While the writer, a German historian, starts slowly and often bogs the reader down in the minutia of better forgotten election counts in obscure countries of the Balkans, his book does gather steam and many interesting arguments and observations are made. Why did the Great War's political ending spawn so many problems? What was Italian fascism? Why did Germany allow Hitler to come to power? What became of the Jews and why? What part in this horrible time was played by the USSR? What was the political aftermath of World War II in terms of Europe's colonial system?

As with any book of this scope an sweep, there are plenty of objections to be made. For example, I find it hard to believe that Pierre Laval was "one the finest political minds France has ever known." (p. 586) Or, that "there was no enthusiasm [by the public] for war in Germany in September 1939." (p.669) Or, that Stafford Cripps had any real shot for the leadership of England in 1942.(p. 746)

Dr. Winkler is weak on United States political issues. One example: When discussing the rejection of the Morgenthau Plan (p. 860), the author claims that if the U.S. leaders had stuck to this harsh economic plan for post-war Germany it would have led to chaos in Germany and for the American people "to rise up against their leaders." I doubt it.

Setting aside my many specific reservations, this is all-in-all, a good thought provoking history--from a modern German perspective--for those deeply interested in the politics and wars of the early- to mid-twentieth century.

An additional chapter has been added to the new edition to cover surface probe microscopy, and there are new sections on digital image recording and analysis, orientation imaging microscopy, focused ion-beam instruments, atom-probe microscopy, and 3-D image reconstruction. Practical-minded, but...

I am revising my first review, which was based on a quick read of the first few chapters. Unfortunately, Amazon forbids revising the stars given to the book. There's no way this book earns the three stars I originally gave it.

The equations are *regularly* wrong, to the point we can't trust what the author says anymore - it could be wrong, it could be right, who knows? The visual graphics are not clearly labeled, and often I (and the entire class) have no idea what is meant by them. The text reads like a "mix n'match" tapestry of paragraphs written separately with no care given to *synthesize* them into a coherent whole. And the end-of chapter "summaries" are anything but summaries - they're easily 30-50% the size of the chapter itself in many cases; nope, that is not a review - it's filler.

But there's a lot more filler than that: pictures are thrown abundantly throughout the book, taking up the space that should have been dedicated to developing ideas in an *adequate* manner. Equations come out of absolutely nowhere, and are given to you to memorize, not understand - because memorize them is all you could possibly do without knowing where they come from.

I have rarely used a book that warranted this bad of a review. The book *looks* like it should be competent (somebody's doing their job up in the PR department, or somewhere), but it so doesn't.

About the Author
Dr. Steven H. Voldman received his B. S. in Engineering Science from the University of Buffalo (1979); M.S. EE (1981) and Electrical Engineer Degree (1982) from M.I.T.; MS Engineering Physics (1986) and Ph.D. EE (1991) from the University of Vermont under IBM Resident Study Fellow program. At M.I.T., he worked as a member of the M.I.T. Plasma Fusion center, and the High Voltage Research Laboratory (HVRL). At IBM, as a reliability/device engineer, his work included pioneering work in bipolar/CMOS SRAM alpha particle and cosmic ray SER simulation, MOSFET gate-induced drain leakage (GIDL) mechanism, hot electron, epitaxy/well design, CMOS latchup, and ESD. Since 1986, he was responsible for defining the IBM ESD/latchup strategy for CMOS, SOI, BiCMOS and RF CMOS, and SiGe technologies. He has authored ESD and latchup publications in the area of MOSFET scaling, device simulation, copper, low-k, MR heads, CMOS, SOI, SiGe and SiGeC technology. Voldman served as SEMATECH ESD Working Group Chairman (1996-2000), ESD Association Technical Program Chair (2000), Vice Chairman (2001), General Chairman 2002, and ESDA Board of Directors (1998-2006), International Reliability Physics Symposium ESD/Latchup Sub-Committee Chairman (2002-2006), International Physical and Failure Analysis (IPFA) Symposium ESD Sub-Committee Chairman (2003-2005), ESD Association Standard Development Chairman on Transmission Line Pulse Testing (2000-2006), ESD International Committee on Education (ICE) Asian University Liason and "ESD on Campus" program founder, and serves in the ISQED Committee, Taiwan ESD Conference (T-ESDC) Technical Program Committee (Hsinchu, Taiwan), and the International Conference on ElectromagneticCompability (ICEMAC, Taipei, Taiwan). Voldman has provided ESD lectures for universities (e.g., M.I.T. Lecture Series, Taiwan National Chiao-Tung University (NCTU), and Singapore Nanyang Technical University (NTU)). He is a recipient of over 136 U.S. patents, over 100 publications, and recently wrote a textbook on ESD entitled ESD: Physics and Devices (John Wiley and Sons, Ltd) as well as contributing to the text "Silicon Germanium: Modeling, Technology and Simulation," and providing talks on patenting and invention. He has been highlighted in EE Times, Intellectual Property Law and Business and authored the first article on ESD phenomena for the October 2002 edition of Scientific American entitled "Lightning Rods for Nano-electronics," and Pour La Science, Le Scienze, and Swiat Nauk International editions. In 2003, Dr. Voldman was accepted as the first IEEE Fellow for ESD phenomena in semiconductors for "contributions to electrostatic discharge protection in CMOS, SOI, and SiGe technologies."
