How to get the most from NiCds and Lead-Acid batteries
By M. Tracy
Rechargeable batteries are everywhere these days - in cell phones, emergency lighting and consumer electronics like cordless tools, etc. Many folks just buy these things without giving the batteries a second thought. Although that in itself is a testimony to the well-developed technology in today's batteries, there is always more to know. For those who want to get the most from their rechargeables - more charge cycles, longer discharge times and longest service life, reading this book is a must. Although it would have been nice to get detailed info on the latest technology such as lithium-ion and nickel metal hydride, the most commonly used batteries are still NiCds and lead-acid.

Informative but outdated
By AWR
This is something of a classic, but in the rapidly changing world of rechargeable batteries, that makes this book quite dated. The book deals extensively with the topic of Nickel Cadmium batteries, with a significant treatment also on Sealed Lead Acid Batteries. You won't find any useful information on Nickel Metal Hydride or Lithium-Ion batteries here. There are plenty of graphs providing good information, but organization of the material is muddled and confused. You will get much more information from "Handbook of Batteries", twice the price, but more than twice as useful.

Old Loyalty, New Love, by Mary Calmes

When jackal shifter Quade Danas was banished from his pack for being gay, he spent years in the military escaping his father's prejudice before returning to civilian life as a bodyguard for Roman Howell, the teenage son of a very rich man. After Roman is in an accident that leaves him physically scarred and emotionally distant, Quade is the only one who can get through to him. As Roman becomes a man, he realizes what he wants―his bodyguard by his side and in his bed. Unfortunately, Quade can’t seem to see past the kid Roman once was to the man he has become, certain Roman’s feelings are merely misplaced gratitude. But Roman knows a lot more than Quade realizes, and he’s used to persevering, no matter how many impediments life throws his way. He wants the chance to prove to Quade that he’s strong enough for a jackal alpha to call mate.

Despite the decades Quade has been away, and the heartache of his father’s rejection, his inborn loyalty to the pack remains, and his abrupt departure left the jackal shifters without an alpha heir. As a psychopath shifter staking claim as alpha draws Quade back home, he may be forced to make a choice he never anticipated. But doing so means he must leave Roman behind… unless somehow they find a way to make loyalty and love work together.

Excellent!!
By D. Guyette
Quade Danas, a jackal shifter, was banished from his pack for being gay. He went into the military where he excelled, gaining skills that will serve him well as a bodyguard to the teenage son, Roman Howell, whose father is a very rich man. When Roman is injured and left disfigured, only Quade seems to be able to reach him. Years have passed and Quade is still with Roman but Roman wants something more from Quade. He wants to be his mate. And no matter what Quade says, it is a possibility.

Word reaches Quade through his sister that his old pack is endangered by their new alpha, who is also a psychopath. His old loyalties are aroused and he knows he must help. But what will happen to his new love for Roman? The two must find a way to make it work. Quade should have no worries. Roman will make sure it does.

Quade was your big tough alpha hero and yet Roman knew just how to get what he wanted, often Quade’s dismay. The fight at the pack served to bring these two even closer. Together, Quade and Roman were so very hot but also so much fun (when not in danger). I had read the second book set in this world and just had to read the first one. Each one was unique except that they each feature hot heroes, danger and lots of action. I recently found Mary Calmes through a different story of hers and now I am hunting out all her stories. I love them and so will you if this is your genre.

Mine! Mine! Mine!
By Astrid
I never read the blurb. Mary Calmes on pre-order is enough to trigger a purchase. As I opened and began reading, it was like the bestest surprise evah!!! Shifters! *happy dance* It goes without saying that I devoured this in one sitting. Even if said sitting lasted until 3 am. (tsk-tsk - Imma tired Mama today)

I love Quade, alpha to the max - strong, sexy and grabby handed! *swoon* I adore Roman, wounded but far from wimpy. *sigh* Yeah, this book hit all my buttons:
*Made me tear up but not booger bawl
*Had me squirming but not bored with non-stop nookie.
*Has me writing down a wish list for sequels. It's a long list.
*Will have me re-reading this frequently.

Highly recommended! This one is going on my comfort food shelf!!

A Jackal Shifter Determined to Do the Right Thing and an Adorable Human Who Has A different Idea About What the Right Thing Is
By Sophia Rose
Jackal shifters in a Mary Calmes story? I'm so on it! Just like her panther stories this one has a nice unique backdrop to it & just like everyone of her stories, its the sparkling characters & the delightful romance that makes them such engaging reading experiences.

Quade is a typical alpha male with a sense of duty & stubborn streak, but it is Roman who puts the fireworks & champagne bubbles into the relationship. Quade tells the story, but both men are prominent.

Through much of the story, it is a slow chase as Roman carefully and methodically corners his prey, Quade, into first acknowledging they have feelings for each other- deep feelings- and that they need to be together. Quade has a big secret that will more than likely change Roman's mind, but then there are those naggy feelings that he is way older than Roman and that its wrong to enter a relationship with your boss- the guy whom you are sworn to protect.

The second half of the story adds the issues from Quade's past when the pack and more importantly the family that kicked him out desperately need him to come back and fulfill his destiny since he's a natural born alpha. Oh and an ex and other attractive men start popping up at the most inconvenient times.

This book worked its magic on me as I both laughed at Roman's antics and got a big cheesy grin at the tender moments. The action scenes have a nice visceral quality that might come as unexpected for those who aren't used to the way the author can give you a tender romance alongside a gritty action sequence. Par for the course with Mary's books.

More please, Mary!

The financial education few of us ever received
By A Customer
This is a textbook for one of those "boring"
junior college courses on planning your life and marriage. Funny thing is, it's also a fantastic wealth of advice and homey insights most of us desperately need. Centers on finances in marriage, always a problem area, but plenty of other good stuff. I think with the right literary agent and a lean rewrite, this would be a bestseller. Most Americans should take Prof. Poduska's course.

A Wittgensteinian Way with Paradoxes, by Rupert Read

A Wittgensteinian Way with Paradoxes examines how some of the classic philosophical paradoxes that have so puzzled philosophers over the centuries can be dissolved. Read argues that paradoxes such as the Sorites, Russell’s Paradox and the paradoxes of time travel do not, in fact, need to be solved. Rather, using a resolute Wittgensteinian ‘therapeutic’ method, the book explores how virtually all apparent philosophical paradoxes can be diagnosed and dissolved through examining their conditions of arising; to loosen their grip and therapeutically liberate those philosophers suffering from them (including oneself). The book contrasts such paradoxes with real, ‘lived paradoxes’: paradoxes that are genuinely experienced outside of the philosopher’s study, in everyday life. Thus Read explores instances of lived paradox (such as paradoxes of self-hatred and of denial of other humans’ humanity) and the harm they can cause, psychically, morally or politically. These lived paradoxes, he argues, sometimes cannot be dissolved using a Wittgensteinian treatment. Moreover, in some cases they do not need to be: for some, such as the paradoxical practices of Zen Buddhism (and indeed of Wittgenstein himself), can in fact be beneficial. The book shows how, once philosophers’ paradoxes have been exorcized, real lived paradoxes can be given their due.

Review
Rupert Read seems to be a spoilsport, until you realize how serious and important his objectives are in this book. He explains away several brain-teasing paradoxes, and he uses those explanations to illustrate and illuminate themes in philosophy, in general, and Wittgenstein, in particular. However, he also investigates subjects such as racism and self-hatred that greatly affect our lives outside of the classroom or study. (Don Levi, University of Oregon)

A fascinating study, by a major Wittgensteinian, of Wittgenstein’s seemingly paradoxical view of paradox: on one hand, mere confusion in a philosopher’s use of words; on the other, the deepest expression of our human nature. In these lively and powerfully illuminating essays, Rupert Read takes us to the very heart of Wittgenstein’s enterprise, offering one way of understanding the sense in which this crucial figure of modern thought both was and was not an anti-philosopher.
(Louis A. Sass, author of The Paradoxes of Delusion: Wittgenstein, Schreber, and the Schizophrenic Mind)

Get a 5 on the exam with this!
By Katie Anne
I bought this in the beginning of the school year and actually used it as my APUSH textbook. The chapters in here are really short, usually around 10 pages, and they pack in the best information. There's also multiple choice and short answer questions at the end of each chapter, if that's something you're looking for. I would definitely reccomend buying this book a while BEFORE the AP exam though, because if you want to seriously go through each chapter and read and take in the info, it will take you a while.

Amazon.com Review
Imagine having 61 widely published photographers from around the world candidly discuss their careers and beliefs while showing you key images from their portfolios. That is the engaging concept of Magnum Stories. From Iran-born Abbas (whose career began with a series about the Vietcong in the 1970s) to Patrick Zachmann (who has documented the lives of Malian immigrants in his native France), each photographer is given ample space to talk about his or her work. Editor Chris Boot accompanies the interviews with a brief explanation of the cultural or political background of each suite of images. The one thing the interviewees have in common is past or current membership in Magnum, a photographers' cooperative founded in 1947 by Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson and David Seymour as a means of breaking free from the editorial tyranny of Life and other photo-based magazines. Boot's introduction deftly summarizes Magnum's history and the practicalities of postwar photography. The presence of vintage "Magnum stories" by such photographers as Erich Hartmann ("Our Daily Bread") and W. Eugene Smith ("Country Doctor") adds a welcome historical dimension. While the founding generation were mostly photo-journalists who organized their images into visual "stories," today's members often pursue topics of personal interest with photographs that do not relate a straightforward narrative. These topics range from outlaw biker gangs in the U.S. (Dennis Stock) to the mountain peoples of Laos, Guatemala and Georgia (John Vink), from the tacky seaside resort of New Brighton in Liverpool, England (Martin Parr) to Siberian prison camps (Carl De Keyzer). With nearly 800 illustrations, this distinctive, square-format book offers a kaleidoscopic survey of the many faces of documentary photography. —-Cathy Curtis

Review
'Marvellous ... how some of the world's best pictures were taken, edited and laid out in order to make the perfect statement.' (The Sunday Times) 'Gives us an inside-out look at how history is recorded. More than 60 photographers tell firsthand about shooting a favourite story, in their own words, and illustrated with famous images as well as some never-before-seen.' (Black & White Magazine) 'The kaleidoscope of world events and prominent figures found within these pages is astounding ... The value of this book can be fully fathomed when one realizes that much of the general population experiences history through photographs, which in turn shapes human memory.' (Library Journal) 'The length of the stories and the essays gives them an uncommonly personal feel and lends humanity to a body of work normally encountered as anonymous, dislocated images. Figuratively and literally a heavyweight title.' (Arena) 'Embracing gritty realism, glamour, intimacy and humour.' (Esquire) 'Scorching, poignant, devastating, serene, playful, Magnum's powerful images always leave an imprint on the mind ... the perfect manual to realise the dynamics and success of this intriguing organisation. If any of their publications represents their ideals and idiosyncrasy, this is it. Like the agency itself, this book is unique. Not only beautiful, these photographs also convey the depth and intelligence with which each photographer has treated his chosen subject. Page after page of extraordinary images ... A feast of stunning iconic images ... The vision, dedication and defiance on these pages are the latest example of Magnum doing things their own way. As the late Henri Cartier-Bresson urged his fellow members: "Vive la revolution permanente!" It seems they are listening still.' (Elaine Livingstone, picture editor, Sunday Herald) 'Gives the reader some fascinating insights into [the photographers'] work ... with so many interesting stories to tell, Magnum Stories runs to over 500 pages. GBP40 [sic] seems a small price to pay for an extraordinary book.' (British Journal of Photography) 'Marvellous ... how some of the world's best pictures were taken, edited and laid out in order to make the perfect statement.' (Sunday Times) 'Lavish, well-illustrated, and important.' (Daily Telegraph) 'Glorious ... celebration of the photo essay. ... stunning, astounding, and beautifully produced.' (Blueprint) 'Such is the pre-eminence of Magnum Photos, that this history of the agency almost serves as a history of photojournalism for the second half of the 20th century.' (RPS (Royal Photographic Society) Journal) 'Impressive, instructive and profound ... an invaluable tool which should be on every picture researcher's shelf.' (Montage, the magazine of the Picture Research Association) 'This mighty tome demands to be taken seriously. Magnum are the originals, the auteurs, the most committed of the photojournalists, and they demand respect. ... [a] masterwork.' (foto8 (photojournalism magazine)) 'Magnum Stories is a superb compendium of international photojournalism, from war zones and refugee camps to urban street corners and hospital wards.' (The Sacramento Bee) 'In a society bombarded with imagery, this book is a timely reminder of the power of documentary still photography.' (Maclean's) 'A marvelous new photo collection is Magnum Stories, which profiles photographers from the legendary agency founded by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa.' (Business Week) 'It is the season for books that cause back strain. This year's 10 lb. plus coffee-table tomes include Magnum Stories, a visual history of the Magnum photography agency...The book combines essays and photos of 61 photographers from the past six decades.' (The Wall Street Journal) 'There's a great story here-actually 61 stories. Boot has structured a book that is fresh, inviting, and provocative.' (Christian Science Monitor) 'Phaidon Press has just released Magnum Stories a breathtaking collection of work by 61 active, retired and deceased Magnum photographers. The 510-page book explores brilliant photographic storytelling, from Eugene Richards' crack cocaine photos to Philip Jones Griffiths' coverage of the 1983 U.S. invasion of Grenada. Along with the photo essays are moving personal statements by each photographer.' (Newark Star Ledger)

Stories -- get to know them better
By Tom
This book is not your usual photo book -- it's real value and what makes it different is the stories inside. Inside, 61 Magnum photographers have written 2-page story about themselves, about why they take pictures, how they work etc. As the book also features photos and/or photo story from each photographer, they also share "inside" information about presented pictures and their background.

I truly recommend this book to all people who have serious interest in documentary photography and like reading/seeing interviews with photographers. If you just want to see pictures and not interested in personalities, then perhaps you should take a look at Magnum Degrees or other similar books.

Brilliant Anthology Of Decisive Moments
By Thomas Edwards
This is a brilliant anthology of the "decisive moments" of the collective individuals who made up the legendary photo agency, Magnum.

Magnum Stories allows one to peer into the mind's eye of the most influential photojournalists of the 20th Century; part history book (as Rodger would have intended), part art book (as HCB would have intended), part photographic teaching book (as Capa would have intended), part autobiography(ies) book, and all at a price that Chim would have appreciated.

One is encouraged to read (simultaneously, if possible) Russell Miller's "Magnum - Fifty Years At The Front Line Of History" to complete the "Big Picture" of the individual Decisive Moments to fully understand the impact of the brilliant artifice constructed by Capa, Chim, HCB and Rodger in that noteworthy spring of 1947.

That said, one would have wished that the other significant actors in the House of Magnum, such as Ernest Haas, Sebastiao Salgado and Mary-Ellen Mark, would have been included in Magnum Stories. Otherwise - Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!

Black Like You: Blackface, Whiteface, Insult & Imitation in American Popular Culture, by John Strausbaugh

A refreshingly clearheaded and taboo-breaking look at race in America reveals our culture as neither Black nor White nor Other, but a mix-a mongrel.

Black Like You is an erudite and entertaining exploration of race relations in American popular culture. Particularly compelling is the author's ability to tackle blackface--a strange, often scandalous, and now taboo entertainment. Although blackface performance came to be denounced as purely racist mockery, and shamefacedly erased from most modern accounts of American cultural history, Strausbaugh shows that, nevertheless, its impact has been deep and longlasting. The influence of blackface can be seen in rock and roll and hip-hop; in vaudeville, Broadway, and drag performances; in Mark Twain and "gangsta lit"; in the earliest filmstrips and Hollywood's 2004 White Chicks; on radio and television; in advertising and product marketing; and even in the way Americans speak.

With remarkable common sense and clarity, Strausbaugh candidly illuminates truths about race rarely discussed in public, including:

- American culture neither conforms to knee-jerk racism nor to political correctness. It is neither Black nor White nor Other, but a mix-a mongrel.
- No history is best forgotten-however uncomfortable it may be to remember. The power of blackface to enrage and mortify Americans to this day is reason enough to examine what it still tells us about our culture and ourselves.
- Blackface is still alive. Its impact and derivations- including Black performers in "whiteface"-can be seen all around us.

About the Author
John Strausbaughis a regular contributor to The New York Times. His previous books include Rock Til You Drop and E: Reflections on the Birth of the Elvis Faith.

From The Washington Post
Anyone familiar with director Spike Lee's satirical film "Bamboozled" will have a head start on the themes in Black Like You, John Strausbaugh's take on the sordid history of blackface minstrelsy, the mongrel nature of America and related skeletons in the closet of U.S. pop culture. However, this excellently detailed account provides a more sympathetic examination of blackface -- defined here as "a form of racist caricature invented by White Americans in the minstrel-show days of the 1800s" -- than Lee's moralizing assessment. The less didactic approach is not necessarily a good thing, lending an often apologist air ("Why does Eminem sound black?" he asks. "Why does Oprah wear her hair straight? Maybe they just like it.") to an otherwise thoroughgoing overview.

Near the beginning of Black Like You, Strausbaugh lines up the nativists -- arguing "that American culture was and always had been the culture the first Europeans had brought with them across the Atlantic" -- against the multiculturalists, who subscribe to the melting pot theory and rally "against the evil, imperialist, genocidal, sexist, racist, homophobic, exclusionist culture the Founding Fathers brought with them and transplanted here." Though he refuses to side completely with the second faction because of what he perceives as their often ironic divisiveness, he does conclude that America owes its true personality to the collective makeup of its various ethnic groups. Americans of color will likely shrug their shoulders at this, an observation they have long taken for granted. How Strausbaugh goes about supporting his perhaps obvious point is what matters most, though, as he delves into the origins of blackface, the minstrel show, early African-American literature, black cinema and Negrobilia collectibles (e.g, "mammy" cookie jars).

A friend once admonished me for being offended by comedian Mike Myers's hip-hop parody in "Austin Powers in Goldmember," for the same reason Strausbaugh offers when denouncing the politically correct: "Surely no one can still be so hypocritical as to believe disrespectful stereotypes are acceptable from people who look like you, but insist it is racism when a member of another race finds humor in it." The author has a point, and he raises it to defend white comedians' right to find above-the-belt humor in the ways of African Americans in the same manner that, say, jokesters on BET's "Comic View" continually poke fun at the behavior of whites. Though Strausbaugh doesn't wholeheartedly excuse the harsher aspects of blackface, this is typical of his stance in Black Like You. He is confident that modern Americans are mature enough to be able to indulge in some mutual teasing about our differences, and he is hopeful that this may lead to some reciprocal appreciation as well.

Strausbaugh is most on target with his rundown of minstrel history, which he concludes by drawing a parallel with modern aspects of rap music. In 1832, T. D. Rice, a white man professionally known as Jim Crow, toured frontier towns dressed in tatters and blackface makeup -- the infamous mixture of burnt-cork ashes worn with clownish red lipstick. His hillbilly minstrel hit, "Jump Jim Crow," sparked a craze that lasted another 50 years as the dominant form of popular music in the United States, before giving way to vaudeville and ragtime. Following the Civil War, black performers took to minstrelsy for the rare professional opportunities it offered.

"Some minstrel songs started as Negro folk songs, were adapted by White minstrels, became widely popular, and were readopted by Blacks," writes Strausbaugh. "The question of whether minstrelsy was white or black music was moot. It was a mix, a mutt -- that is, it was American music." The same case is made nowadays to claim jazz as American music rather than the sole invention of black Americans.

The chronological approach of Black Like You surveys the evolution of minstrel music from backwoods immigrant entertainment to its appearance in more legitimate theater, such as stage adaptations of Uncle Tom's Cabin. In 1890 Ernest Hogan incorporated ragtime into the minstrel format with his "All Coons Look Alike to Me," creating the offshoot of "coon songs." Strausbaugh makes it simple to trace the lineage from a minstrel dandy such as Zip Coon to the current rap popularizers of bling such as Lil Jon. He occasionally strays off message, such as when he wanders into an ill-considered exploration of Ebonics. But overall, Black Like You is an all-encompassing, breezily written summary of an aspect of American popular culture usually swept under the rug.

Great Issues but not enough substance.
By CT Shopper
I thought the themes that Strausbaugh spoke about consistently were important themes that effect American popular culture. Though I feel that he lack of research driving economic forces behind Blackface and the minstrel shows and how that continued to perpetuate them in pop culture showed a flat view of the issue that only talks of morals. In a country where there is a large divide between the wealthy and the not wealthy it is hard to just view issues as pure moral issues that people need to stop being so Politically Correct about in their daily lives. I thought had he done more of the research himself and came to more critical decisions it would have been a better outing.

The first thing to say about "Black Like You" is that it's fearless. The second is, John Strausbaugh is a pretty funny guy.

There are so many themes in this serious book - no reason serious has to be solemn - that's it's hard to know where to begin, but a main theme is that blackface entertainment can be understood as youth rebellion, as much as or even more than some fundamentally racist trope.

Although "blacking up" can be traced way back, it erupted into popular culture on the Bowery in the 1830s, and the patrons were mainly young (often Irish) marginal white boys, who were under economic pressure from the proletarianization of American labor in the 19th century (a process explored solemnly and in great depth by Sean Wilentz in "Chants Democratic." Strausbaugh does not seem to have read Wilentz, but his conclusions are similar.). The same phenomenon, Strausbaugh says, erupted again and again, youth thumbing its nose against stodgy authoritarianism and dull order, as with the blues, rock and roll and hiphop.

Another theme is that America is a mutt culture,. It is not possible, in Strausbaugh's view, to make a bright line between racist blackface and the other kind. There were black minstrel performers, and in fact at some points they were predominant, and black blackface minstrel shows outlasted the white blackface.

Clearly, this is a cultural phenomenon that is not easy to pin down. Some blackfacing was viciously racist, some not so much, and maybe some not at all. Strausbaugh has no patience for either the antiblack racists nor the moralizing racists of the multiculti school.

He forthrightly calls the so-called diversity crusaders of the present day racists, and no one can doubt it. Although he does not put it quite this way, it is a question for philosophers: Who, in a country that is 70% white and 70% Protestant, is more "diverse," an African-American Baptist or an Italian-American Catholic?

Some of the book gets pretty far away from popular culture. Strausbaugh spends many pages on crappy movies, which may have been popular in the sense that they were not "high," but were not popular in the sense that many people were aware they existed. Their bare existence may tell us much about American attitudes - Strausbaugh would say they do, and I mostly agree with him - but there's a big difference between cult films and "Amos & Andy."

For example, Strausbaugh starts out with a report on a modern blackface comic, Chuck Knipp, whose character is Shirley Q. Liquor, but who also has a white persona, Betty Butterfield. Of the two, the white character is a vicious portrayal, a pillpopping Southern dimwit; while Shirley Q. Liquor is self-proclaimed "ignunt" but really a woman with few of the opportunities of Betty Butterfield doing the best she can in an unforgiving world. Knipp is not obviously a racist, but he is definitely misogynist.

In any case, not many Americans know Chuck Knipp, who is rather a cult figure with white homosexual men, and (I venture) not even many of them. It is hard to say to what extent Knipp represents 21st American popular culture.

Anyhow, Strausbaugh is right to think that "blacking up" reflects "a tremendous emotional, sexual and political confusion," and "Black Like You" does about as good a job of sorting it out as anyone ever has.

This is a highly readable book with some interesting and thought-provoking ideas. I can't vouch for the accuracy of everything presented here, but for the most part the data seems fairly plausible and convincing. For me, the first 3/4 of the book were far more interesting than the final chapters which analyze black influences in modern culture. Toward the end of the book I was anxious for it to end so I could move on to something else. I didn't buy some of the premises here, especially regarding "ebonics" and influence of Black speech on American English language. And though not too heavy handed, I did sense some sort of gay agenda wisping through some of the content of the book. Not making any accusations, but not sure what the author was trying to say about that and I didn't care to dwell on it.
Not a book that many people will love, but worth checking out if you are interested in the topics presented in the pages of BLACK LIKE YOU.

Praise for Freeing Your Child from Anxiety
"An excellent book, one of the best of it's kind...This book has the potential for helping thousands and thousands of children, their parents, and their families." --Judith S. Beck, PH.D., President, Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research, Clinial Associate Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry, University of Pennsylvania

"The master of providing clear, accessible, practical advice and guidance for wise and loving care of the anxious child." ---Jeffrey M. Schwartz, M.D., author of Dear Patrick

Praise for Freeing Your Child from Negative Thinking

“Tamar Chansky, Ph.D., has done it again—written another incredibly helpful, practical book. Freeing Your Child from Negative Thinking offers specific strategies for parents (or any adult) to use with children and describes variations on these strategies for younger children and older adolescents. Every parent who has a pessimistic, negativistic child should read this book! As parents use the thinking and behavioral strategies that Dr. Chansky recommends, they will undoubtedly find that they themselves are becoming more optimistic and positive, not only toward their child but also more generally in their own lives. I highly recommend this wonderful book.” --Judith S. Beck, Ph.D., Director, Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research and Clinical Associate Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry, University of Pennsylvania

“Many youngsters are burdened by self-doubt, negative feelings, and depression. Their lack of confidence and sadness typically trigger feelings of confusion and distress in their parents as the latter struggle to find the best approach to help their children develop a more optimistic, resilient outlook. Tamar Chansky’s book Freeing Your Child from Negative Thinking offers a wonderful resource for parents. In a very skillful manner, Dr. Chansky’s explains the roots of negative thinking, but most importantly, she offers specific, realistic strategies with actual dialogue that parents can use to minimize their child’s negativity. Her empathy and understanding for children and parents is evident on very page of this very readable, practical book. It is a book that parents of children of all ages will read and re-read as they seek to help their children perceive themselves in a more hopeful light.” --Robert Brooks, Ph.D., Faculty, Harvard Medical School and co-author of Raising Resilient Children and Raising a Self-Disciplined Child

“Tamar Chansky gives parents a dynamic approach to helping their children escape thinking badly about themselves and their world?thoughts ranging from mild negativism to clinical depression. Her insightful and creative techniques, based on scientifically grounded cognitive behavior therapy, are, on any given day, helpful not only for parents and their children but for all of us. Next time I want to blame myself for something that went wrong, or feel terrible about something I did, I will open this book and I know I will soon feel better.”--Myrna Shure, Ph.D., author of Raising a Thinking Child and Thinking Parent, Thinking Child

“Tamar Chansky has distilled cutting-edge research on optimism, pessimism, depression, and resilience into an incredibly thoughtful guide for parents. Her book is full of suggestions about what to look for and what to do (and what not to do) that parents should find engaging and accessible. Reading this book should ease the worries of both parents and their children.”--Barry Schwartz, author of The Paradox of Choice and Professor of Psychology, Swarthmore College

“In a clearly readable fashion, Dr. Tamar Chansky combines clever phrasing (for adults) along with “kid speak” to communicate with youth. From her having worked with anxious youth who struggle with all of the possibilities (too many), Dr. Chansky shifts to the negative youth who see no future—the youth who mistake one thing for everything. She walks the reader through discussions that focus on how negative experiences happen to everyone, and that they are ‘manageable’ and ‘temporary’. This book is not a review of the scientific literature, but it is a readable set of guidelines and understandings that are informed by it.” --Philip C. Kendall, Ph.D., ABPP, Professor of Psychology and Director, Child and Adolescent Anxiety Disorders Clinic, Temple University

“For every parent who wants their child not to feel bad, here is an excellent book to feel great about. In Freeing Your Child from Negative Thinking, Dr. Chansky abundantly gives parents powerful, easy to apply tools to ensure the emotional health and success of any child. I hope no parent trying to help their child to get ahead misses out on reading this wonderful book packed with valuable advice.”-- Jeffrey Bernstein, Ph.D., author of 10 Days to a Less Defiant Child

Chapter 1

“I Can’t; I’m Too Scared”

Understanding Children’s Fears and Worries

From the children:

When I was little my mom worked the “graveyard shift” at the hospital. Every night I was so worried that meant she was going to die and I’d never see her again.

I hate having to worry all the time. I can’t do anything without thinking—are my parents okay? is my family okay? It is always in the back of my mind. I wish I could just turn off my mind, but then I feel like a bad person for feeling this way, because I love my family and I don’t want anything bad to happen to them.

My parents get mad at me for staying up late working. They keep telling me to stop worrying. That stresses me out more. They have no clue the pressure I’m under. It wasn’t like this for them. Everything I do counts for college. There’s nothing to cut out, this is just my life.

From the parents:

Until he knows for sure, he can’t, he won’t. How do I convince him life is OK?

I feel like the worst parent. I want to help my son, but I lose it and I know that’s not helping anything. I start out patient, but nothing I say makes him feel better. Then I get frustrated and it’s a mess.

My son is so worried all the time; he’s constantly in this bubble of stress. The other kids are oblivious all around him. They are just being kids. I wish so much that he could be more like them.

If you want to make things better, you first need to know what’s wrong. In this chapter we’re going to explore exactly what an anxious child’s inner experience is like and the different ways that anxiety can manifest. We’ll explore the fine line between when anxiety is “normal” and when it’s not, and we’ll take a look at what causes anxiety. All of this will help you empathize with your child’s experience so that you can better help him overcome his worries and fears.

The Problem of Living on High Alert

“Don’t run into the street! Stop climbing on that. Careful, that will break!” Words like these are staples in most parents’ rule books, but most parents of anxious children find they never have to utter them. The mind of a worrying child is already fielding hundreds of internal “be careful” or “watch out” or simple “don’t!” messages every day. Rather than insisting that their child do their homework as in most families, you may be wresting papers from your kid, convincing him he has done enough and it’s time for bed. In fact, you may even find yourself kept in check by your worrying child—“Did you lock the door? Is the gas tank full? Did you send in the permission slip?”

Though it can often be confusing or frustrating to parents that their child must feel every wrinkle in the day and race ahead to prepare for every eventuality, we must understand that anxious kids are just following the instructions that their worry brain is giving: Proceed with caution; handle with care; warning: danger ahead.

Whether they are worrying too much about typical concerns such as grades or friends, or being frightened by unlikely disasters like getting a fatal disease or becoming homeless, anxious children are highly cautious because their mind is giving them unreliable, biased information and overcorrecting for the possibility of danger. But they don’t know that. They are oriented—by their wiring, or their experiences—to see danger when it’s not there. Though it sometimes seems that anxious children go looking for trouble—whether it is overhearing a conversation in the hallway about lice, or financial stress or heart attack, their hearts sink and their worry soars—they don’t want to be this way. They are equipped with a system that is programmed to be highly sensitive to any hint of uncertainty, to risk, to danger. But it’s a system that is not very good at interpreting that risk or uncertainty. So kids notice everything but don’t get any help putting those observations into perspective.

Sometimes anxious kids recognize that they are different from their peers, but oftentimes they assume that this is just who they are, rather than seeing this as a problem that can change. But to be an anxious child—at any age—is to juggle; it is to live a double life. As one articulate youngster said: My heart is telling me things that make my stomach feel bad. On the one hand, there is a constant barrage of catastrophes, worries, and disasters flashing through their minds. Their default setting is high alert. Meanwhile, on the other hand, their parents and teachers tell them not to worry, and sometimes these adults even get frustrated with them for feeling the way they do. This adds to their worry, because now they feel they’re doing something wrong!

Conducting their lives as if they’re in the middle of a fire station, anxious children are constantly on edge, waiting for the next alarm to sound, the next disaster to strike, and amazingly with all of that going in their minds, to the outside world anxious children often fly right under the radar of the best-trained eyes. It is much to their credit that they can keep all the balls in the air and do so well—but it is not without a cost.

Parents juggle too. On one hand, they feel embarrassed when it’s their child who is hiding in the corner at the birthday party, in tears at the school play, or unable to go on the school camping trip. In these moments they just want to make the problem stop. On the other hand, they feel scared: If my child is struggling with all these hypothetical fears in the midst of a pretty great life, how will they ever survive when they have a real problem? Caught between these two views and feeling helpless, they may try to diminish the fear, ignore it, or even get frustrated at their child for being anxious. But what they need to do is understand what is going on. That’s the beginning of finding a new solution.

Make It Stop! The Problem with Anxiety: The Emergency That Isn’t

All children need to know that they are safe and that their parents will protect them. Anxious children are no exception, but helping them feel safe is a complicated and often frustrating endeavor. This is the poignancy of an anxious child.

He or she comes to you, drops their fear, unhappiness, or uncertainty in front of you, and waits for you to fix it. Struggling with invisible enemies, they want you to save them as you would protect them from any concrete danger. You see your child unraveling and that the degree of distress your child is feeling is out of proportion to the situation, but what he’s experiencing feels like an emergency, and he wants you to take away the emergency or he wants to escape.

Put those two together and your child might get angry or frustrated at you for not being able to save him and make him feel better. He might think that you are being mean because you can’t make it better, or even that you’re choosing not to make him feel better because you won’t do the simple things he asks (like letting him stay home from school or assuring her for the twentieth time that morning that she won’t throw up). And you probably feel frustrated yourself that the usual magic touches of parenthood—a hug, a kiss, and some reassuring words—aren’t doing a thing. While you could do all the things that your anxious child asks, you know that meeting these surface needs will not free her in the long term, but will only engender dependence on you for reassurance forever!

Anxious children feel trapped, and they want you to get them out. The more that you understand that what is trapping your child is the faulty information their brain is telling them, the more you will be able to separate the worry from your child and help them begin to correct the distortions and mistakes—by themselves.

Fear: A Normal and Necessary Part of Life

What is the setup for anxiety? Fear. On one hand, fear is an adaptive human reflex and an essential safeguard for survival, for children and adults alike. Fears and worries can help children put on the brakes in unfamiliar situations. Rather than hurling yourself into a swimming pool when you don’t know how to swim, for example, a good dose of fearful “what if?” can keep a healthy degree of caution in the picture. Because our natural inclination is toward growth and development, we would not survive as a species if it were not for our ability to hold back and appraise and avoid danger. It is a protective mechanism and a normal part of development.

Fear can be considered the emotional response that occurs in the space between confronting a new situation and actually mastering it. Anxious children are wired to notice these gaps more than others. Rather than responding with delight and curiosity—a desire to master something new—they become derailed by an overwhelming feeling of distress and concern. The “what’s new” is eclipsed by “what’s wrong.”

Temporary fears are a normal and healthy part of development. In the same way that adults may be fearful of a new piece of technology until we have figured out how it works—and may even entertain unrealistic scenarios of blowing up the computer by pushing the wrong button—kids’ fears are fueled by an active imagination, trying to piece together an explanation for how the world works in the high-stakes context of their safety. A little information goes a long way. A four-year-old at the aquarium is afraid of seeing the sharks because she’s old enough to understand that sharks are dangerous, but she’s not old enough to understand that she can watch safely from outside the tank. An eight-year-old is beginning to understand about germs and disease, but he can’t yet grasp how unlikely it would be to get sick just from engaging in normal activities.

The Typical Developmental Sequence of Fears in Children

There is a normal unfolding of fears for all children, not just anxious ones, over time. A healthy safeguard, these fears mirror their development as their world broadens and they encounter new experiences that they have not yet mastered. As children interact with the new experiences they gain confidence and competence and move on to the next stage.

Infancy: Babies’ fears are immediate and concrete. In response to a growing ability to differentiate familiar faces from unfamiliar faces, stranger anxiety (clinging and crying when a stranger approaches) develops around seven to nine months and typically resolves by the end of the first year. Infants fear separation, loud noises, and sudden movements.

Early childhood: As a healthy attachment to parents grows, separation anxiety (crying, sadness, fear of desertion upon separation) emerges around one year of age and improves over the next three years, resolving in most children by the end of kindergarten. As children’s worlds expand, they may fear new and unfamiliar situations, as well as real and imagined dangers such as big dogs, spiders, or monsters.

Elementary school: With access to new information and a growing ability to grasp the gravity of events, children begin to fear real-world dangers—fire, burglars, kidnappers, storms, illness, drugs. With experience, they normally learn that these risks present remote, rather than imminent, danger. They continue to struggle with what is real and what is not—so fears of ghosts, witches, and zombies are common.

Middle school: The growing importance of social status leads to social comparisons and worries about social acceptance. Concerns about test grades, crime, social isolation, athletic performance, and social-group identification are normal.

High school: Teenagers continue to be focused on social acceptance, but with a greater concern for finding a group that reflects their chosen identities. They tend to worry about the narrow focus of their social relationships as well as about the larger world, moral issues, and their future failure or success.

The chart that follows provides an example of the top ten fears for typical boys and girls (in this study, ages nine to thirteen), without any anxiety or other diagnosis, and how they differ by gender.

Anxiety: Unnecessary and Disruptive

In contrast to fear, which is a natural, adaptive, immediate reaction to a stimulus, anxiety is the tense emotional state that occurs when you can’t predict the outcome of a situation or guarantee that the outcome will be the desired one. It’s the mind doing guesswork, and by always guessing catastrophe, it doesn’t guess well. It is not adaptive but disruptive—at the very moment when it would be helpful to lean in and get more information about an unknown or new situation, anxiety takes our attention ninety miles an hour into the future, into disasters that will probably never happen. Meanwhile, the real problem is still waiting for us to solve it—but we’ve been so dragged around by worry that we can’t think straight or see our options.

Even in the best circumstances children experience some fear and worry. Anxiety becomes a disorder when a child automatically exaggerates risks and underestimates his ability to cope with a given situation to the extent that this interferes with his functioning (more about this in Chapter 2). Anxiety is debilitating internally to children, causing chronic fatigue and putting children at other physical risks like hypertension, heart disease, and gastrointestinal and respiratory disorders. It is also implicated in the development of depression and substance abuse, and it is associated with decreased immune function in general. Just as dangerous, anxiety hinders and restricts children’s movement in the world around them, affecting how they function in school, how they interact with peers, and their role in their family. The familiar stereotype of the worrywart belies the serious physical and emotional risks and consequences of untreated anxiety.

Who Is the Anxious Child?

Anxiety has many faces. Some children appear visibly stressed, while others keep their anxiety under cover and worry silently. Still others are angry-anxious kids, reacting to their limitations with frustration. Approximately one in five children will develop an anxiety disorder of some kind. We know that the rates of anxiety disorders tend to increase slightly with age, but most studies of anxiety disorders draw from a sample of children over seven, so the prevalence of anxiety disorders in very young children is unclear. Girls tend to be diagnosed with anxiety disorders more often than boys. Interestingly, though, more boys are brought to treatment as the outward signs of anxious behavior, like crying, shying away, and overt distress, tend to be less socially acceptable in boys than in girls.

Wonderful book!!!
By Michele
In her book, Freeing your Child from Anxiety, Revised and Updated Edition: Practical Strategies to Overcome Fears, Worries and Phobias and be Prepared for Life - - from Toddlers to Teens, Dr. Tamar Chansky, provided two very important things that countless therapists and Doctors over the years have been unable to give me and my child. The first is hope and the second and most important is a very clear and easy to understand guide on how to cope with, manage and possibly overcome anxiety.

The list of interventions we have tried with my child is VERY long, and nothing provided any sort of relief. Because of this we were both pretty skeptical about the book but we were not even through the second chapter when I started to feel excited and hopeful and by chapter 4? I was in tears. As a mom, I want my child to feel comfortable exploring the world and his anxiety had not allowed for that and my pleas for someone to help him find a way to cope seemed to fall on many, many, well educated deaf ears.

My son and I have been working on the techniques in the book and the child who has been completely unable to keep it together in spaces that are too loud, too crowded, new or different recently sat through an entire Christmas play in a very crowded auditorium using what he has learned in this book, and he was completely ok!! Simply amazing!!

Not only do I HIGHLY recommend this book to every parent who has a child struggling with anxiety but I firmly believe that every teacher, pediatrician and mental health professional across the board that works with children should make it a point to read this book as soon as possible.

I received a free copy of the book from Blogging for books for my honest review, and for this particular opportunity I can not thank them enough!

A great resource for parents!
By TOM123
My five-year-old son is a worrier (like his mama...sigh) , so I was excited to have the opportunity to review the book "Freeing Your Child From Anxiety, Revised and Updated Version" by Tamar E Chansky for the Blogging for Books Program. I received a copy of the book for free but am not required to give it a positive review.
I wasn't disappointed. This is a great resource for parents and I know I will reference it for years to come. Chansky helps distinguish between normal worry and what crosses over into an actual anxiety disorder. She covers everything from common childhood fears to disorders such as OCD and PTSD. She also offers helpful tools for parents as far as what to say to help your child when they are anxious (Hint: It's not "Don't worry!"). Honestly, some of the tools in this book will be just as helpful for me as an individual as they will be for me as a parent.
I would recommend t this book to anyone with an "anxious" child or who is wondering if their child's fears are normal or when to seek professional help.

SO Much Helpful Information!
By M. Myers
This book contains SO many helpful tips on how to help your child who suffers from anxiety issues. The only reasons I didn't give it 5 stars are that (1) it contains so much information that I found it a little overwhelming. I had to read it over several months just to give myself time to soak it all in and try some of the strategies myself. But too much information is better than not enough! So I guess it really shouldn't be a complaint... (2) The book tends to focus on kids with specific anxieties whereas my child has a general social anxiety that isn't specific to any particular situation or trigger. While there are chapters on GAD (general anxiety disorder) and social anxiety in this book, they mostly repeat some of the strategies already discussed earlier in the book. Overall though, DEFINITELY worth the read if you have a child who suffers from anxiety.
