This book is definitely a great book to read for those who are doing educational research. It gives an inside and detail methodology of how , where and what to do when you are doing your research. The part that I like best is the Part 2: Methods and their limits that give me a better pictures and ideas on survey research and case studies. Grade A for this book.

If you want in-depth info about the Balinese....

Though this book was originally published over a decade ago, it remains the best source in English for learning about the Balinese through their rituals, daily life, and cosmology. It is not casual reading, but it is also not academic, because Eiseman has such love and interest in the Balinese themselves, not just Bali as a 'paradise for tourists.'

As one reviewer said, "he has produced the most detailed descriptions yet of most aspects of Balinese life and culture. He lives down in Jimbaran on the south coast, so many of his descriptions relate particularly to that area - practices change a bit in different places. He understands the Balinese language, which is not the case with many academics, who visit Bali briefly and write learned treatises, and don't always get it right."

The Sekala and Niskala are ways of saying 'the seen and the unseen," the outward appearances of things and all the symbolic, or mystical, or ritual meanings of all the things he describes. The book is not a tourist guide to places--it's a guide to what makes Bali the fascinating place it is beyond the beaches, massages, and spas. I didn't read it until after I'd come to Bali; but a friend read it before coming and said it really helped him understand some of the things he saw. So either can work--I carry it around on my Kindle and refer to it often.

I would recommend this book to people who find the Bali life around them fascinating and want to know the 'why' of so many aspects of it. From ceremonies to masks to why garbage is placed in a certain part of the house compound, he provides the answers. Because the book is essays you can go to any chapter and not feel like you should have started at the beginning.

Wonderful Book

During a recent visit to Bali, I became fascinated with the practice of Hinduism there and how it influences every aspect of daily life. I recorded my guide's explanations as we went along, but I wanted to learn much more. This book, based on first hand experience, has provided all I was looking for and more. If you are interested in world religions and Balinese culture in particular, I can't say enough good things about this book. Unfortunately, the author passed away in 2013. I would have loved to correspond with him.

The keynote lectures were given by six leading experts: Prof. Ah Chung Tsoi (Australia Research Council), Prof. Zhiyong Liu (National Nature Science Foundation of China), Prof. John Mylopoulos (University of Toronto), Prof. Ramamohanarao (Rao) Kotagiri (University of Melbourne), Prof. Calton Pu (Georgia Tech), and Prof. Zhiwei Xu (Chinese Academy of Sciences).

Good content suffers from poorly executed Kindle version

I like the content. It doesn't attempt to be exhaustive, but offers a guided tour through the language. I'm using this as a refresher from the last time I tried to learn Scala, and I'm happy with the amount of detail. It's not as complete as some other books.

Reading this on Kindle suffers from a number of problems. The code snippets are poorly formatted. There's a link to an image at the back of the book, but navigating back to the original location is hard. I can't access the table of contents in Kindle Cloud Reader, making navigation hard. Copy and paste appends a silly copyright notice.

I'm happy I bought the book, but I wish I had bought the PDF version instead.

what a joy

Elsie De Wolfe is acknowleged as the first woman to make a fortune as a decorator and can be called the first life style maven of the 20th century. Her opinions on home decor were eagerly seized upon by millions of aspirational women around the country. She wrote The House in Good Taste 90 years ago but it's just as fresh and suitable now as it was then.
I can't bring myself to agree with her on patchwork quilts, lace curtains or rocking chairs but she's absolutely correct in her advice on wallpaper, paint and apartments. It's amazing how much this delightful and informative book still has to teach us.

I bought this book when it first came out. I tried reading it, was (too) quick to call it 'trite' and gave it away. Later my boyfriend gave me a copy (not knowing that I'd tried it before) so I had to slog through it. I am so very glad I did. Ms. DeWolfe has a unique style of writing that must be understood before you will truely enjoy the book. She has a wit and charm that is backed by such sincerity that few designers today could pull this level of writing off. The book will make you want to find more by or about this stylishly pragmatic decorator

Brass Beds, Lace Curtains, Rocking Chairs be gone!

This book was a surprise. Written in 1914 it seems current. I had delayed reading this classic, to my regret. De Wolfe's wonderful book is back with an updated introduction and several additions in the note section at the back that refer to today's decoration. It also includes the reasons behind her dislike of Eastlake furniture--which is just fabulous stuff, especially when re-upholstered in a updated print (the same goes for most Victorian furniture). I agree with her on her dislike of brass beds and lace curtains...but she also disliked rocking chairs...and for that, one must consider she never had a baby...

First, a lot of what she said is relevant then, as it is today. There is a big difference though, and that is simply put, people do not have her kind of money...so in some ways her advice has a bit of Marie Antoinette feeling to it. That shouldn't surprise as she lived across the street from Versailles.

Her writing is vibrant,and conveys the person behind the taste. She loved chinoiserie, fireplaces, leopard print, stripes, chintz and trellis. Would she fit into a Nate Berkus world...no...but decorating tastes move on and one can see a hint of Elsie here and there. Though I still prefer Sister Parish by far...Elsie is a close second.

Take a trip from your couch or school through the rain forest!

This well-written, informative and colorful book is a must have if studying or learning more about the rain forest. Unlike some of the other children's books on the subject out there, this one very clearly states the four levels of the rainforest, starting from the top:
Emergent layer
The canopy
The understory
The forest floor
Rivers (not really a layer but shown)

The book is written in short spurts in that on each page there are several different labeled paragraphs under one big title making it easy to read and comprehend. There are a wealth of photos included along with the facts and vocabulary. Animals, plants, birds etc are all in here. At the end of the book there is a glossary as well as a animal alphabet so you can quickly look up on which page a particular animal is.

A wealth of information for youngsters! Highly recommended!

Great informational book about the Rain Forest. My daughter in 3rd Grade needed a book to write a report about and one that she could do a presentation on for the Rain Forest. It was very informational and she still reads it a year later.

A very thorough, organized textbook

David Matthews's A Course in Nepali is a very well written textbook, it does not assume any previous knowledge of the language. The book starts with the Nagari script step by step into the complexity of Nepali grammar. Grammatical explanations are very detailed and thorough, readers are expected to take some time to patiently digest each lesson. The exercises are also well designed, closely correspondent to the content of each lesson. There are not only conversations (like the Teach yourself Nepali), but also reading passages from different genres, and translations of the passages are also given for readers for checking comprehension. But I have to say, this book is not an easy textbook, it tends to cover all important grammatical points of the language, making the book very dense, without previous experience of Indic languages, this book will appear to be difficult(I have background in Hindi, Urdu and Sanskrit, this book is just perfect for me) . If you are not serious about studying Nepali, or just want to learn some phrases for a short trip to Nepal, this book is definitely not for you, in that case you should buy Lonely Planet's Nepali Phrasebook. That being said, I give 4 stars to this book, because the accompanying audio material is not readily available, making practicing listening comprehension difficult.

A linguistics text book

The material in the book is nicely organized and clearly explained. It is an exposition of the language, instead of a "learn a few phrases quickly" text book. If you are going there next week, and you need to ask for the bathroom in Nepali, this is not for you. If you go there next year, and you like an academic style, you may like it.

Not five stars because of the many typographical problems which arose from the conversion to a digital copy. Sometimes the characters lack important features which make them look strange to someone who's just started learning how to read devanagari.

I also contacted the publisher to inquire about the promised audio material (as instructed in the preface), and they said it's out of print.
