Great Stuff

Do you know why Tubby calls himself the Spider? It's because he spins a web to catch his prey.

The numbering and publishing order of Dark Horse's "Little Lulu" series is rather confusing. #1-18 reprinted five (52 page) comics in each volume. All pages of content were included, unfortunately the covers and advertisements were not. These 18 volumes are in black and white, the volumes were very affordable if poor substitutes for the original four-color pages. Dark Horse has recently begun re-packaging these in Giant 600 page volumes (also in black & white).

Then in 2010 (with Volume #19) Dark Horse began releasing color versions of these collections, in the proper register and with their front covers included.

"Little Lulu Volume 26: The Feud and Other Stories" is one of these color releases. It includes the six issues of the comic book (#130-#135) originally released between April and September 1959. By 1959 the monthly books were only 32 pages.

John Stanley did all the pencils and some of the inking for these five books, in partnership with Irving Tripp. Cartoonist Marge Buell created the characters in 1935 for the Saturday Evening Post.

By 1959 the drawings had become less faithful to Buell's style, they were drawn with a bit more detail and early readers felt they had lost a bit of their original charm. But if your first exposure was to the later style you will feel right at home with this volume.

There are several "Little Itch" stories included and Tubby has a case as "The Spider". Tubby's cousin Chubby makes an appearance, as does Fifi - the little French girl who says things like: "Il dit que...jabber..jabber...jabber".

Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.

A perfect compilation. I got this for my 10-year-old daughter because I wanted her to have the experience I had when I was little reading Lulu's comics. She LOVES it!! We will be buying more for her. I am so glad that we can get these gems online! Thanks!!!

Little Lulu never fails to entertain the reader while she solves the problems she meets every day. This was my favorite comic when I was a kid, and now my granddaughter enjoys it, too.

This book, like another reviewer stated, is geared toward people who are already familiar with the concepts. This is not a text for the beginner. Also, the symbols used in the book are confusing and some of the formulas are not adequately explained. If you are studying for an actuarial exam, get another book.

Purchase at your own risk

To begin with, I think that this book is written for those who already have a familiarity with the material. Just so you know my experience with this book, I took a college math course where this was the required text. I soon found out, that the examples through the chapter were decent, but the questions at the end had little or no correlation to those previously read in the chapter. I should add that what made these questions decent is that you could decipher the meaning of the chapter examples because the examples solutions were directly after.

I think that if the author spent a little more time making the review problems a little more understandable and similar to those seen previously, than thinking up different names for the people in every single problem, He may have written a decent book. And that is a BIG MAYBE!

If you are thinking of purchasing this book to prepare for the Actuary FM Exam, DON'T. Stick to the ones on the SOA recommended list, or one of the Temple or Actex study manuals.

So easy... a Cave man can do it.

Very simple. Sometimes going complex doesn't work for everyone - even in the age of P90X and Insanity.Since this fitness book is coming from a man who was obviously fit enough to survive and thrive as a SAS operator - I think the SAS Personal Trainer takes the basic sound concepts of physical fitness and allows even a beginner to have a clear path to draw from.

to become really fit the military way

If you like to see how to get fit the military way this is a very great book. This one is twards the sas forces. Contrary to the US forces which emphasises a lot of upper body strenght you see here the total approach. SAS troopers need to marsh endlessly. (read about their gruelling selection course). This books tells how to get fit, using circuit training, weight programms (not used for the beach boys who just wants to look pumped up, but this program is just to be prepared for the rigours of combat). More is told to train for endurance by running, swimming, cycling and of course the famous endurance marches. At the end a total programme is given for the beginner, intermediate and the advanced. This great book is finished with telling you more about nutrition (I said nutrition NOT pills for those beach bubbles) and mental approaches. I really recommend this book together with Andrew Wheales fighting fit (which gives sas, paratrooper and royal commando programmes) and Steward Smith's the complete guide to navy seal fitness.
With those 3 books you cannot go wrong and be the fittest and mental (because of this training) toughest person.
So buy these 3 and be FIT and combat ready.

Completely different than the MOVIE!

If you are familiar with the movie that came out, I must say, this is COMPLETELY different. Yes...its mostly the same in the beginning but other than that, much of the plot is different as well as the ending. I really loved this book and love Howl's character. Its a "feel good" book that gets you hooked right away.

Summary: A young girl gets vexed by an evil witched to lives as a 90 year old woman. She travels out to meet with her sister and stumbles upon Howl's castle and decides to take refuge from the bitter cold within. She then meets a fire demon who offers to break the spell on her, as long as she can break the spell that is on him.

There were a couple things in the movie that I didnt like and that didn't make sense to me until I read the book....If you don't like spoilers then dont read below because here is a minor spoiler that explains part of the movie:

In the movie, at times when Sophie would be sleeping or felt happyness, you would see her appearance transform into a young girl again. Then she'd suddenly change back to an old woman again. Why is that???? Well in the book, you find out that Sophie has always felt like a 90 year old woman because of her bland clothes and life. Sophie has magical capabilities that she doesn't realize until the very end. When you see her as a youthful girl, it is because she feels young at heart. She often tells herself that being an old woman suites her and this is what her appearance becomes as a result if her own will. There. Now the animation makes sense.

I liked the book more that the movie and will purchase other novels by Diane Wynne Jones.

Easy, fun read.

Like many other reviewers, I read this book after watching the film. I loved the film but felt some plot points were left unexplained so I picked up this book to get the full story.

I liked the characters, I felt both Sophie and Howl were very relatable. The writing is clever especially the contrast in how Sophie describes Howl when she's young and when she's old, and the introduction of Howl's homeland. I felt sucked into Sophie's anguish over her curse and her relationship with Howl. Like many other readers have said, you fall in love with Howl despite all of his flaws, he bears them well. Overall, It was a fun easy read.

I deducted one star because despite the book filling in the plot holes left from the movie, it has holes of its own. The book leaves many unanswered questions and the desire for more details on certain points. The book also ends very abruptly. Nobody wants an ending to drag on but I was hoping for a little more in the development of Howl and Sophie's relationship. At the end it's almost as if they fall in love because that's what characters in books do. There were many points of missed potential.

It's my all time favorite

This is my favorite book in the whole world. I've actually bought two copies because the first one I read so many times the binding broke and the pages started falling out. It's a heartwarming story of a younge girl who doesn't believe she will have good fortune in her life because she is the eldest of 3 daughters. A spell is cast on her which turns her old and she has to figure out how to lift it. A tale of believing in yourself and being capable of things you don't even realize. It's witty and you find yourself loving the characters. It's easy to read and I can read the whole thing in a day if I don't do anything else. I've read it about 20 times and it never gets old. I would recommend the book to anyone (I'm 24 and first read the book when I was about 15) it's a great story and very family friendly if you're buying it for child in school still. You can't go wrong reading it at least once

If you want to know why the country (and the world for that matter) is so screwed up, and you want historical proofs not just opinion then read this book. The author takes us all the way back to the Renaissance, through the Reformation, and then to the Enlightenment, where everything goes wrong, and stays wrong. This is followed by the Romantic era, then the Modern era. All the while the theme of fascistic thought is examined. This is nothing new but a direct result of Western civilization giving up the concept of absolutes for the so-called freedom of thought engendered by the Enlightenment philosophers. They may not have been "Fascists" but they sure helped the idea along. The conclusion is that although Fascism as a political movement is no longer active, its ideas are still with us, and getting stronger every day. Our politicians are fascistic and don't even know it, because they follow Enlightenment thinking (when they think at all). As you can tell, this book has been a very stimulating read. It shows us why our Western civilization, in rejecting Christianity, is setting itself up for disaster.

It describes how some of the ideas of facists supporting the Nazis (such as Ezra Pound and Martin Heidegger) are now eminating from the university in postmodernism, and how these ideas lead to totalitarianism. It confronts the anti-transcendant, inherently irrational, and relative utilitarian ethical foundations of such lines of thought as postmodernism, existentialism, deconstrution and the avante guarde, and details the inevitable and disasterous consequences when these academic speculations are put in to practice in the real world. A short pithy read for anyone interested in postmodernism and its place in history. I really should have given it 5 stars, but now I can't change it. Veith is an excellent writer and social analyst whose books are generally short, dense and thought provoking.

Fascinating. Utterly fascinating.

Wish I'd known about this book years ago, instead of discovering it a couple weeks ago.

It's a given that Nazi's are the perennial bad guys of movies and history, with Hitler usually a stand-in for Satan. It's normally overlooked that they had a specific philosophy, that most of their support and leadership came from university intellectuals.

What did Nazis believe and why? Why did they want to kill Jews? Most people actually don't know (some European counties even ban Hitler's book "Mein Kampf") and that, to some degree, is by intent, though it flies in the face of "... if you don't know your history, you are condemned to repeat it...."

In the 1920's and 1930's fascism was popular among intellectuals in the US and abroad. It wasn't until after the war, when the results became clear that many repudiated it.

This book shows the ideas actually lived on, tracing them through specific people and events into the "kinder, gentler" faces we now call New Age and "PC" and "Post-modernism".

Whereas the Judeo-Christian heritage focused on a transcendent God and moral law, fascism rejected that for what is tangible and in nature. Nature and community assume a mystical role.

Essentially, these things are the pre-Christian European paganism of antiquity, coupled with modern media and armies. As part of this, Goering sought to re-establish the ancient "sacred" sites of Germany ... in many ways, Nazism was the revival of the cult of Woten, reborn in the philosophies of Darwin, Nietschze and Romantiscm.

These beliefs were the unquestioned underlying assumptions of the intellectual elites in the 1930's and they remain so today.

Marxism and fascism, far from being polar opposites have much in common. Nazism = socialism + nationalism, while Marxism = socialism + internationalism. Difference is mostly method and in the early part of the century, intellectuals would switch back and forth from being marxists to fascists.

This book draws extensively on original sources to document the purpose and intent of 20th century fascism to eliminate the Judeo-Christian heritage. It documents Hitler's orders to Goebbels and Goering to maintain leadership roles in the church, to maintain credibility, against their will and how in his own words "... after difficult inner struggles I had freed myself of my remaining childhood religious conceptions...".

Hitler wrote how, having solved the more manageable Jewish problem, it would be necessary to address the "church problem": "The point that must be reached is to have the pulpits filled with none but boobs, and the congregations with none but old women. The healthy young people are with us."

And from a Hitler Youth camp song: "We are the happy Hitler youth, we have no need for Christian virtue for Adolph Hitler is our intercessor, and our Redeemer ..."

The book then traces the philosophy of fascism from it's origins into the modern institutions of today. Not perfect, but an awesome book in implication.
